To cool the crowd they show a hype video for WrestleMania XXIX.
Then they show an awesome Punk-Rock video package.
From there Josh Matthews interviewed The Rock backstage. He talked about overcoming obstacle, talking about his mom’s cancer and rising up and telling the world to “just bring it.”
The Rock v. CM Punk (c)
The Champion came out first, which is annoying, but The Rock’s pop was worth it. This had a huge big fight feel to it even before the bell rang. Michael Cole has been great all night spouting out history and statistics.
The crowd popped for the ring bell.
The two start fast with brawling. Rock clotheslined Punk out of the ring. On the outside Rock bounced Punk off the announce table and the barricade. Punk back with kicks to Rock. Back in the ring, Rock with a spit punch that put Punk back out of the ring. On the outside Punk took control. Rock reversed Punk into the barricade. Paul Heyman on the outside with a cheap shot to Rock, allowing Punk to take control again. Punk drops Rock stomach first on the barricade.
Back in the ring Punk worked over Rock’s midsection. He locked in a bodyvice to slow things down. Back up with Rock hitting some punches, until Punk stopped him with a knee in the midsection and a two count. He then locked in a neck crank down on the mat. Back up Rock with punches and an atomic drop, but Punk stopped the momentum again. Punk gets another near fall after dropping Rock stomach first on the ring ropes. Punk with a back kick into the midsection as Rock swore up a storm. Punk with stomps. Heyman with another cheap shot behind the ref’s back.
Punk kicked Rock off the apron and onto the floor again. Punk up top with an elbow down onto Rock on the floor. Great spot. Back in the ring, Rock noticed Punk limping and attacked the leg. Rock ended up back on the outside as Punk bought some time. Punk with a dive through the ropes onto Rock.
Back in the ring, Punk missed a move and Rock took advantage of the hurt knee. Rock gets a one count. Rock looked for a Rock Bottom but Punk weathered it. Rock blocked the GTS and went for the Sharpshooter. Punk rolled through that and locked in the Anaconda Vice. Rock rolls it through for a two count. Back on their feet with punches and a DDT by The Rock. Both men down.
Rock looked for the Rock Bottom again but Punk countered again and looked for a neck vice. Rock rolled through that locked in the Sharpshooter. Punk got the ropes. On the outside Rock dropped Punk with a clothesline. He cleared out the Spanish Announce Table and both men fought on the table. They fought between Punk’s GTS and The Rock Bottom. Rock set up for the Rock Bottom but the table collapsed below them in a scary spot. Thankfully both were okay and recovered quickly. Rock improvised by hitting Punk with the Rock Bottom on the ring floor instead.
Back in, Rock gets a two count. Back up, Punk leveled Rock with a wicked roundhouse kick to the temple. Both men were down to a 9 count. Back up again they trade punches. Rock with a flying clothesline off the ropes and Spine on the Pine. Rock set up for the People’s Elbow and the lights killed just as he was about to hit. Michael Cole continued on commentary and said The Shield powerbombed Rock on the announce table while the lights were dark.
Punk then scraped up The Rock and brought him back in the ring and got the pinfall.
Winner – CM Punk
I did not see that finish coming. Punk then unceremoniously rolled Rock out of the ring.
But here came Mr. McMahon. He was about to strip Punk of the Title due to The Shield’s interference but Rock interrupted and convinced him to restart the match.
On the restart, Punk started fast on a hurt Rock. Punk with a running knee in the corner and a Macho Man top rope elbow. He got two off of that. Punk looked for GTS which Rock countered into Spine on the Pine and the People’s Elbow for the three count.
Winner (and new WWE Champion) – The Rock
The Rock celebrated as only he can to an adoring crowd.
That was a great match and a great show all the way around. The three hours just flew by.
