Bob Woodward has had the audacity to speak the truth…not that he hasn’t done it in the past. The difference is that this time it goes against the official line of mainstream media, the talking points of the White House, and the diatribe that Barack Obama has been trotting out all over the country for the last two weeks.
What on earth did he say that resulted in an open threat from the White House? Woodward said that the sequestration, which is part of the Budget Control Act of 2011, wherein there will be automatic budget cuts, was Barack Obama’s idea in the first place…that he’s getting what he asked for. Woodward’s invitation to join Tea Party Nation will be going out as soon as we can confirm his email address!
The Budget Control Act of 2011 calls for caps on discretionary spending. Under the law, discretionary spending will be lowered starting in January, 2013, with the goal of removing $1.2 trillion in spending during the next ten years. Also, certain temporary tax cuts (spell that “Bush tax cuts”) were scheduled to expire at the beginning of 2013. We all know how that went!
Obama’s only counter to Woodward’s claim was that the House Republicans held the debt limit increase hostage and this made necessary the suggested sequester. It’s a straw dog, and it’s grasping at straws! One might even say it’s grasping at straw dogs… Hmm…
Yes, the GOP held the limit increase for ransom! Yes, that made the sequester seem necessary! But, does anyone think for a moment that this minuscule reduction would even be in play had the GOP not dug in their heels? Does anyone think that when we as a nation find ourselves over 16 trillion dollars in debt, on the verge of fiscal default, having gone through two historical credit rating reductions, and being faced with raising taxes during a depression that has this president’s fingerprints all over it, that a paltry, symbolic-at-best reduction in our debt is so very bad? Can anyone truly believe these things?
This whole discussion about Woodward is no more than a distraction from the conversation that we as a nation should be having. The issue being ignored is that the boogeyman in Obama’s nightmares has no teeth! Cutting the budget by 2% will do far more to boost confidence in the economy than raising spending by a similar amount could ever do! This, after all, is what half of the world has already done, much of it on the insistence of this president!
The White House is happy to have good ol’ Bobby Woodward to kick around. It takes the headlines off of the fact that this discussion is over a mere $85 billion reduction in the projected growth of the budget, is part of the total $1 trillion in cuts that will be spread over the next 9 years! We are arguing over $85 billion with a 2013 annual budget of $3.8 trillion as submitted by Barack Obama (Congress has not passed a budget for over three years).
Do the math, people! This is a whopping 2% cut! Barack Obama is running around threatening airport traffic controllers, defense industry contractors, education, head start, and everything else he can think of over a mere 2% of the budget, that he himself has proposed.
Obama had to have known that this was coming. The House has been steadfast in its refusals to approve irresponsible budgets, but it has passed three bills which the Senate has ignored. What is being argued over is not even a part of a budget that has been passed constitutionally, except by the House! There is no constitutional budget at this point in time, nor is there likely to be with a Senate run by Harry Reid. It is a pseudo-budget that has resulted via continuing resolutions made necessary by the Democrat-controlled Senate that will not “get off its ass”, to quote House Speaker Boehner, to either accept or reject bills passed in the House!
The result is that Obama gets everything he ever wanted, less the 2%. This is not an argument over money. $85 billion is a drop in the bucket to the most powerful nation on earth. It is about power, control, and the role of government in the United States of America!
