The case of Kai, whose viral video by a Fresno, California, TV station of him describing his defense of a women by smashing their attacker with a hatchet. Kai is being hailed as a hero. In the viral video on the lower left, Kai emphatically told a KMPH-TV reporter that he took out his hatchet and “smash, smash, smash,” took down a racist man who ran down an African America utility worker and then went after two women. The utility worker suffered broken legs but his injuries are not life-threatening. Be cautioned that the video is laced with swear words.
The case is making headlines in the US and in the UK. The London-based Daily Mail features a story about the “surfer dude” turned hero.
The Daily Mail headline reads, “‘Smash, smash, smash’: TV interview of mystery hero Kai the ‘surfer dude’ takes the web by storm after he stops crazed driver with a hatchet.”
The Headline in the UK’s Metro News reads, “‘Smash, smash, smash!’ – Heroic homeless hitchhiker with hatchet goes viral.”

Kai told the Fresno reporter that he was “straight out of Dogtown” and that he had hoped to surf one day in Mavericks, in Northern California. Fresno is in Central California, about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Kai was hitchhiking when he was picked up by 54-year-old Jett Simmons McBride. McBride is over six feet tall and weighed over 300 pounds. McBride was treated for his injuries and is being charged with attempted murder. Kai said the deranged man evoked Jesus Christ, used the n-word, and ran down a black utility worker. Fortunately, the man’s injuries were not life-threatening. The man then when after two women. That’s when Kai sprang to action and hit and killed McBride after striking him with a hatchet.
The story was generating a number of supportive comments in the UK press. Malice Amarantine commented in the Metro article, “That guy is kind of my loser hero. Like, he’s a totally worthless hippie, but he’s a principled hippie who has no problem with standing up for people even to the point of violence. Liked what he said about the 14 year old girl in the full version. If he were up here, I’d buy him a bong and a wetsuit on general principle. Good on you, dude.”
Miss Dita told the Daily Mail, “Kai is a beautiful human being. You could tell the interveiwer was impressed because he kept wanting to talk to him and get his perspective on things~~~~which, coming from this young man, Kai, were all REAL. Way to be, Kai, for selflessly helping those people and stopping a maniac. You made the world safer and you brought sunshine, too. You’re the best! I wish you every happiness.”
Kai did not give his last name nor age to the reporter. The big question now is where is Kai, the “smash, smash, smash, surfer dude” who saved the lives of two women? Many are trying to reach him because they would like to donate the surfing gear that Kai wants.
