There are tons of different options available while cruising. Typically there are fitness related activities, trivia related activities, sports related activities, and crafts related activities available during each cruise. This does not even incorporate the vast array of entertainment that happens on cruise ships.
On sea days typically you are able to participate in multiple different activities. Some cruise lines even offer culinary experiences, which can range from cooking classes to bartending classes. The programs offered often vary by sailing in large part due to the demographics of the passengers. Some things are planned based on where the cruises are headed to incorporate activities better suited for select climates among other things.
As I write I can tell you there was a great co-ed belly flop contest held on the ship today. This is one of those events where the guests are strongly urged to participate in the fun and games. Everyone tends to get a little something for their participation, such as a medal or ribbon. Winners sometimes walk away with a bottle of bubbly. There are both adult and kids events available and even at times family events.
Most ships publish a newsletter every day. Typically it is published in time for evening turndown service. This allows your cabin attendant to place the information in your cabin so you can review it before the new day begins. For me a ritual before going to bed is to review the activities for the next day and mark those which I want to be sure to consider. (Many folks bring a highlighter with them on the ship to mark the activities.) I then carry with me all day the planning guide so I can find other activities as I need to fill some time. The daily planner also typically shows show times as well as opening times for all of the food and beverage venues.
Some theme cruises offer a bunch of activities around a specific theme. These cruises usually take a bit of searching but can be found. These cruises are usually noted well ahead of time and advertised as such. It is also quite likely that these cruises may also have additional costs. These can be some incredibly exciting cruises if you are seeking out the special activities that will be offered. Culinary cruises are among the ones which come to mind first. Often these specialty cruises are charters by a vendor who oversees the special activities so sometimes finding the cruises takes more than a quick call to the travel agent or cruise line.
When the specialized cruises set to a theme do take place, expect lots of special activities atop the normal cruise activities. The variety of special activities can be social, sport, or education, but regardless on these cruises everyone tends to be there for that same special activity so it is usually even more fun than normal. These are great cruises to enjoy.
Overall you will find on most of the larger ships (as well as many of the smaller ships) tons of activities available depending on what it is you want to do. Rock walls, ice skating, rappelling courses, navigation classes, celestial viewing, libraries, bridge games, vodka seminars, cooking demonstrations, participate in iron chef competitions, and much more. Don’t forget about the pools, spas, whirlpool, sauna, and deck chairs for sunning. The gym and walking tracks await guests as well. You can ask the guest services folks, read the daily activities section of the newsletter you get daily, or check you in-stateroom TV for information about activities coming up over the next 24 hours or so.
Some special once per cruise activities not to be missed include (these are ones I specifically like) the captains talk, ice carving demonstrations, food carving demonstrations, the belly flop contest, and the farewell show. There are so many other special events every cruise it is important to keep up with what is going on and attend those activities you like. It is ultimately up to each cruise to do what they want that will make their own cruise more enjoyable. Be sure to take your video camera to these activities as it’s possible to capture a great youtube moment to post. Participate if you can and want to get a lot of attention the rest of the cruise.
We enjoy chatting about cruises with folks and especially helping them to pick a memorable cruise experience, especially when it is a once in a lifetime vacation for them. We recommend signing up for alerts to new articles on this and other cruise related topics. We typically publish at least once per week and more often when breaking cruise news warrants additional articles.
