Two cases of student discrimination over transgender issues hit the news on Feb. 27. One transgender girl’s parents filed a discrimination complaint over her school’s refusal to allow her to use the female restroom in Colorado while another transgender girl angers fellow students over her ‘special treatment’ in Mississippi.
Transgender dress codes questioned
WSMV.com reported that students from a South Panola High School in Batesville, Miss. protested the special treatment given to a transgender girl. The students claim the trans girl was allowed to wear clothes not appropriate to her gender so the students wore gym shorts and sweat pants to protest. The school’s dress code states all students must wear clothes appropriate to their gender.
Restroom usage by trans children questioned
Meanwhile in Colorado, parents of a 6-year-old transgender girl filed a discrimination complaint against Eagleside Elementary School after the principle revoked her permission to use the girls’ restroom. She was offered to use the nurse’s or the teachers’ restroom as an alternative to the boys’ restroom.
Raising transgender children is difficult for many parents. The children feel there is a conflict between the physical assignment (born male or female) and what they identify as. This inner conflict most often is diagnosed as Gender Identity Disorder.
Transgender children don’t fit in the social mold of what is expected of them and many are bullied in the school systems. This creates a hardship not only on the transgender children, but also on the parents.
Parents can be unsure on how to guide them and they may question their parenting skills. The TransFamily Support System is a resource offered by TransYouth Family Allies to help parents and transgender children understand and become educated on trans issues.
