According to a Feb. 26 report from MMA Junkie, UFC star Alexis Davis wants the next crack at Ronda Rousey because she feels she is ranked higher than both Miesha Tate and Cat Zingano.
“I was so disappointed that Dana was saying they might give the (Zingano vs. Tate) winner (a title shot),” Davis said following Rousey’s victory over Liz Carmouche. “I’m like, ‘What?’ I’m higher ranked than both these girls.’ Miesha already had her chance. I don’t know if that’s going to happen, but I’m hopeful that he reconsiders.”
Davis is ranked higher than Zingano on three different forums, so there’s no real argument there. Zingano is undefeated, but she hasn’t yet faced the upper echelon of competition in the women’s bantamweight ranks.
It’s not quite so clear cut when it comes to Davis vs Tate.
“Cupcake” is ranked as the No. 2 bantamweight in the world by Fight Matrix, while Davis is two behind in the No. 4 slot.
Bleacher Report also ranks Tate as the No. 2 female bantamweight, with Davis (No. 5) coming in behind both Sarah Kaufman and Sara McMann.
Tate and Davis have won 13 fights each, so it’s tough to say definitely who deserves to be ranked higher.
In all likelihood, Tate and Davis will both eventually square off against Rousey inside the UFC Octagon. It’s just a matter of who will get the nod first or second.
“That’s why I tweeted (UFC President) Dana White,” Davis said. “You have a wrestler with Tate. You just had a Marine fight her, and you’ve got a striker with Sarah Kaufman. I’m a [Brazilian jiu-jitsu] black belt. C’mon. Give me that chance.
“It’s killing me, too, because my last couple victories I won by rear-naked choke. I get to the back all the time. I wish I was there.”
In Davis’ last win, many women’s MMA fans said her victory pose was zombie-like, as she had blood streaming from her mouth while her opponent, Shayna Baszler, lay motionless on the mat.
In honor of Davis, here’s a look at the top ten female MMA fighters most likely to survive a zombie attack.
No. 10. Jordan Nicole Gaza
Zombies don’t defend well against double leg takedowns, and Gaza has some of the best in the game.
“The Ninja Princess” could easily change her fighter nickname to “The Zombie-Killing Princess,” and it would be perfectly fitting.
No. 9. Veronica Rothenhausler
Rothenhausler is a tall, lanky, deceptive striker who would have a significant height and reach advantage over most zombie attackers.
She also has one-punch knockout power, which would be quite helpful in the event of a zombie attack.
No. 8. Marina Shafir
Zombies cannot be killed with jabs to the face, but they can be stopped via armbar.
Shafir, known by many as Ronda Rousey’s roommate and training partner, has a devastating armbar technique that even the craftiest of zombies would have trouble defending against.
No. 7. Leslie Smith
Leslie Smith’s lanky 5-foot-9 frame, superb striking and deceptive speed would pose significant challenges to most members of the brain-eating undead.
No. 6. Ronda Rousey
Rousey is undefeated, and there’s no way her first loss would come at the hands of a zombie.
Rousey would work for a judo throw, and immediately put the zombie on its back. “Rowdy” would secure the tapout shortly after, via her signature armbar.
No. 5. Bec Hyatt
There are several ways to kill a zombie. You can run one over with your car, light it on fire or hit it in the head with a crow bar.
Hyatt is an intelligent, crafty young woman, and there’s no doubt she would find a way to make it through a tough zombie invasion.
No. 4. Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc
In the event of a zombie invasion, it’s best to have a lot of friends supporting your efforts.
Luckily for Rivera-Calanoc, her posse rolls quite deep. Besides being the best of friends with fellow striker Miesha Tate, Rivera-Calanoc has the support of female fighters such as Laura Sanko and Glena Avila.
No. 3. Kaitlin Young
Make no mistake; Kaitlin Young is one dangerous woman.
Young’s arsenal includes a devastating head kick that would knockout even the toughest of zombies.
No. 2. Rachael Cummins
In order to kill a zombie, you’ll need to do some extensive damage to the only thing that’s keeping them alive. That thing is the brain.
To destroy the brain, one must focus most of their energy on the head. Cummins is one of the top strikers in women’s MMA, so it seems pretty clear that she would have a great chance at destroying a zombie’s brain before it would be able to bite down on her.
No. 1. Alexis Davis
Davis’ win over Shayna Baszler resembled a zombie attack, and the Canadian passed the test with flying colors.
One glance at Davis’ post-fight celebration photo reveals a true zombie-killing spirit coming through in full bloom.
