The horror genre seems to have given way to ratings more than being scary with many coveting the PG-13 rating instead of of the R rating that would give filmmakers more leeway to produce a truly horrifying film. While many horror films of today rely more heavily on suspense the movies of yesteryear relied on a good old fashioned scare the pants off of you approach without regard to the MPAA rating.
Some of the movies on this list have had remakes that are as good as the original but to understand the remake you should really see the first take if for no other reason than to see how the film has progressed without bastardizing the feel of the original movie.
A good horror film must have the element of realism, surprise, the ability to delve into the psyche of the viewer and still be able to make you have an uncomfortable night of sleep. The following movies are mostly cult classics but still very much real and very true to the horror genre.

#5 Blood Splattered Bride
The story of “The Blood Splattered Bride” revolves around a new bride who quickly becomes weary of her husbands intense sexual drive and perversions and seeks solace in Carmilla, a vampire with unspeakable power. After seducing the bride Camilla has her do some evil bidding while the husband becomes concerned and learns the true identity of Camilla. The movie does not use sex as a focal point but rather a means to an end and the conclusion of the movie will keep you on edge even after you finish watching.
#4 Peeping Tom
“Peeping Tom” is a 1960 film that follows an aspiring filmmaker who gets involved with a prostitute and eventually ends up killing her all while he films the act. As he grows more brazen and obsessed with killing and filming the expressions of the women while they are being killed. The most intense part of the movie is not the killing but rather the reason why he chose to kill and why he enjoys filming their death.Though initially considered a cult film the movie has been called a masterpiece by some.
#3 Last House on the Left
“Last House on the Left” is based on true events and centers on two teenage girls who go looking for a good time and end up kidnapped and taken to a wooded area and forced to endure depraved acts and violence all within yards of one of the girls home. The remake of the movie stayed true to the original with one exception but both are very good movies and ones that will make you think twice before allowing your daughter to go out for a night on the town alone. The parents discover what has happened to their daughter and seek revenge and the way they do so shows the viewer there are no limits when it comes to protecting your children.
#2 Rosemary’s Baby
“Rosemary’s Baby” is one of those movies that takes you places where you never hope to go and put you in a position of choice that you never want to have to make. A young couple move into their new apartment and are soon acquainted with their creepy neighbors. While the bride tries to keep her distance the husband seems to fall quickly under their spell and she eventually ends up pregnant but not with his baby. Mai Farrow stars in this cult classic that has become a movie that does not use horror so much as realism to scare the wits out of you. The ending shows there are no limits to a mother’s love…
#1 I Spit on your Grave
“I Spit on your Grave” is one of those movies that is not only unsettling but scary in the fact that the human psyche can only be pushed so far before you have to fight back. A young girl goes on a working vacation to a small town in the middle of nowhere where she is defiled by a group of backwoods brothers and a corrupt sheriff. Thinking she is dead they go about living their lives as if nothing happened until one by one they begin to pay for their crimes against nature and one pissed off woman. The remake stayed true to the original only the revenge was a little more creative. Both movies are excellent but watching the original first makes the remake even more creepy. As with all movies of this sort the unrated versions are always the best to get…
