Last week, 10 girls participated in the first Sudden Death rounds in American Idol history.
Now, the remaining members of the American Idol: Season 12 Top 40 Women, battled it out to impress the Idol judges: Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj as they sang to earn one of the final coveted spots in this year’s Top 10 Men’s category.
Who knocked it out of the park? Who faltered? Read on to find out!
Melinda Ademi had the daunting task of singing first. Unfortunately, she tackled Jessie J’s “Nobody’s Perfect.” The audience could not understand her because she mumbled the lyrics of the song. Nicki stated that Angela sang it better than her, while Randy added that she did not have a crucial moment that was needed. Overall, it was a big mess. D-
One of this year’s frontrunner, Candice Glover, was next to try to impress the judges. She paid tribute to the Queen of Soul when she tackled one of Aretha’s biggest hits: “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman” and showed off some strong vocal runs and her incredible showmanship that earned her a standing ovation from Keith and a great comment from Nicki. Juliana Chahayed played her guitar to perform an acoustic version of Demi Lovato’s hit: “Skyscraper.” Juliana’s vocals were in-and-out most of the time and her nerves were showing. While Nicki stated that it was timid, Randy added that it was a good performance and Mariah said that it had an angelic quality about it. Unfortunately, it was not her best performance. D+
Seattle’s Jett Hermano performed an unmemorable cover of downtempo version Rihanna’s “Only Girl of the World.” While Keith stated that he liked the arrangement and stated that Jett brought out the sexiness in the song, Nicki stated that she did not feel anything from her. C
San Antonio’s native daughter Cristabel Clack delivered her rendition of Alicia Keys’ “No One.” She shared her stunning vocal runs that got the audience off their feet and delivered a solid performance that received a standing ovation from the original American Idol judge. Keith stated it was fantastic and Mariah wants to her more from her. A-
Aubrey Cleland sang Beyoncé’s “Sweet Dreams” and showed off her entire vocal range that stunned the audience. Nicki stated that she was “Obsessed” with her while Randy added that she was ripe to be a commercial artist but stated that it was the wrong song for her to sing. B
The cheery Rachel Hale tackled Grace Potter & The Nocturnals’ “Nothing But the Water.” Rachel would remind people of Jennifer Nettles’ strong vocals and she showed a different side tonight that impressed the judges and got everyone up off of their feet. A-
Hurricane Isaac survivor Breanna Steer surprised everyone with her rendition of Jazmine Sullivan’s “Bust the Windows” that impressed everyone and received strong feedback from Randy, Nicki and Mariah. All three of them stated that she would be very marketable. A-
For three years, Janelle Arthur has been waiting to reach the Top 40 singers portion of the competition. While she made Lady Antebellum proud with her rendition of “Just A Kiss” but she received mixed feedback from the judges. Nicki stated that she did not have to overdue it every time and Randy added that it was not the best song choice. B+
Idol’s Wild Child Zoanette Johnson closed the round by honoring her Liberian roots and sang Sir Elton John’s “Circle of Life.” I am very happy to say that she finally taking the competition seriously and showed off her powerful spirit and received a standing ovation from Keith, Nicki and Randy. The “Starships” singer stated that after tonight, no one would forget her. A-
After all the performances, it was time for the judges to deliberate on who stays and who goes. In case, the judges were deadlocked on one contestant, Idol in-house mentor and Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine would step in and cast the deciding vote. Luckily for the contestants, Jimmy would sit out tonight.
The judges decided that Zoanette, Aubrey, Candice, Breanna and Janelle were sent through to next week’s semi-finals while Melinda, Juliana, Cristabel, Jett and Rachel were eliminated from the competition.
Tomorrow night, the Boys face off for the final five spots in the Season 12 Top 20.
