The Oscars is one of the most exciting nights in television. The dresses, the paparazzi, and the celebrities we know and love hoping to take home that thirteen and a half inch tall golden statuette. For a nine year old, it is downright magical. At nine years old, most certainly aren’t working the red carpet at Hollywood and Highland.
Quvenzhané Wallis got to experience that magic this year. She is the youngest actress in Oscar history to be nominated in the Best Actress category. Wallis strutted down the red carpet, signature puppy purse in hand, and watched the festivities from the front row. However, the young actress’s magical night was soiled when the Onion tweeted the following: “Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c*nt, right? #Oscars2013.”
The Onion is known for it’s satirical point of view, but on a night as important and special as this one, I think we can all agree that The Onion’s comments were out of line. The magic of the night for Wallis was tarnished. There has been back and forth on Facebook and Twitter about the incident. Some saying it was The Onion’s special way of giving her publicity- much like the Kanye West and Taylor Swift controversy.
The Onion has since apologized but unfortunately in Hollywood no one is off limits. Though she’s sure to bounce back, it’s a sad story of innocence lost.
