Cassie Nightingale (Catherine Bell) has settled into Grey House, the house she inherited. Her boyfriend Sheriff Jake Russell (Chris Potter) and his children Brandon (Matthew Knight) and Lori (Hannah Endicott-Douglas) are happy to have her in the neighborhood, but she has yet to gain the trust of some people in town, particularly the mayor’s wife Martha Tisdale (Catherine Disher).
Martha Tinsdale, the wife of the mayor of Middleton, and fellow Garden Club member Gwen are walking in front of Grey House, where Cassandra “Cassie” Nightingale lives. Outside it is a greenhouse filled with exotic plants, one of which ensnares Martha’s ankle, scaring her away.
Brandon and Lori are raking leaves with Cassie, along with their grandfather George (Peter MacNeill). Jake pulls up in his police car and tells Cassie that the mayor’s trouble-making wife Martha Tisdale came to the police station earlier to report having been attacked by one of her plants. Cassie assures Jake that her house is a safe, perfect place for the Middleton Bicentennial Celebration.
Before George leaves, Cassie asks him to stop by the nursery and pick up some remedy for her
plants. Cassie also tells George she’s thinking of taking in boarders in order to help pay for all
the renovations she’s been making on Grey House.
Nick Chasen (Rob Stewart), a new man in town, shows up at Grey House and says he is looking for a place to stay. Nick is a charming man in his early 40s, and Cassie welcomes him to board at Grey House. Jake is surprised that Cassie is taking in boarders and warns her about being too trusting of strangers.
Nick makes a good impression on many of the townspeople. He tells Cassie he is a descendant of Captain Charles Hamblin, the man who Elizabeth Merriwick, better known as “the Grey Lady” and the original owner of Grey House, fell in love with.
Before long, Cassie is presented with papers that show the stranger is entitled to legal ownership of Grey House. Before she knows it, Cassie is left without a home and is convinced Middleton isn’t where she belongs. Ultimately, everyone will learn holding on too tightly to something can make it more likely that thing will slip through your fingers.
