Ryan: “He’s playing homage to Carroll. It’s following in the footsteps of his hero. It’s ceremonial, work of an acolyte.”

This episode primarily centers on Denise, Joey’s nanny. A lot is revealed about her like her name is actually Emma. The writers do a good job of showing how she came in contact with Carroll, and how he began to get her connected to his followers. What would be nice is more of an explanation of why she joined/became obsessed with Carroll. Her conversation with him in the flashback book signing hints that there is perhaps something a little darker about her. Odds are she joined the cult of Carroll because he was charming and nice to her, but still it would be nice to see what lead her to killing her mother. Clearly liking Carol and finding him charming isn’t enough of an impetus to kill her mom. Did you like learning more about Denise/Emma?
Flashbacks play a big part in this episode and perhaps even the series. Sometimes it is a little hard to keep the chronology straight, but as long as the writers keep using them to highlight more character moments rather than an overall chain of events it should be okay. Right now the flashbacks are working nicely. Viewers are able to see a cute side of Ryan and Claire. It isn’t hard to root for them, considering the other alternative is to root for her and Carroll, but it’s still better to be able to see a moment where Ryan and Claire are being adorable and romantic. What are your thoughts on the flashbacks?
Here are quick thoughts on elsewhere in the episode. There’s a new player in the mix, and she is a cult specialist, although she’s not a fan of the word ‘cult.’ It’s hard to figure out what to make of Debra Parker. She does bring some great insight into things, and she doesn’t seem to be completely anti-Ryan. Her scene at the end with Joe is a little troubling, but that could just be the suspicion talking. What do you make of her? Without a doubt, The Following is a dark show, and so it not surprising that there isn’t that much humor. Weston does bring some humor, and even though it is only a line or two, it is still great to have a moment of relief. What did you think of the episode overall?
