Christine Eisley is mother to seven-year-old Zach and five-year-old Haley. Her ex-husband provides little to nothing in the way of child support and pretty much just makes life difficult for Christine by using the children as pawns in his scheme to get back at her. She works long hours as a waitress to make ends meet, but her job is in a lot of trouble due to constantly having problems with teenage sitters making her late to work. So when Christine saves the life of a woman who works in Wilson’s department store, the owner wants to find and thank her. But Christine has disappeared because she lost her job yet again. He sends his grandson off on the project to find the mysterious “Christy.” Jason is an accountant by trade who lost his job due to company downsizing and thinks he is above working at Wilson’s. But he soon discovers that this new task gives him a lot more than he had bargained for.
“The Christmas Secret” is a very cute holiday novel. Donna VanLiere always writes great Christmas stories which are just Christmas-y enough. The story would make a great film, much like Donna’s previous Christmas novels (the Christmas Shoes, etc). The characters are really believable and it almost plays out exactly like a movie would. You also have to love the colorful, artistic cover of the book – it just screams Christmas! And the storyline is well done without a boring moment. Christine is a great mother character. The kids are amazingly adaptable to their circumstances, and the story shows well the holiday spirit that is to be expected. For those that are religious, this has a lovely sentiment though it does contain a few cuss words, which may bother some. So far, all that I have read from Donna has been quite amazing. I can’t wait to read more from her! If this sounds like it would interest you then check her books out!
