Horse owners accumulate many “tools of the trade” during their years of horse ownership, filling tack rooms with halters, saddles, bridles, brushes and everything under the sun for the care of their horses. Most will hit a saturation point, needing to clear space.
Enter L.E.A.N., the Local Equine Assistance Network. L.E.A.N. is a non-profit horse rescue group begun just over a year ago by volunteers with All Vegas Horses. L.E.A.N. takes in and fosters abused and neglected horses (and ponies, mules and burros), nursing them back to health and finding them permanent, loving homes.
To raise funds for this endeavor, L.E.A.N. presents its second annual Giant Tack Swap at Horseman’s Park on Flamingo Road behind Sam’s Town on February 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Horse owners with space issues can purchase a stall for $10 and set up camp with all their extra horse paraphernalia, trading and/or selling it to other equine enthusiasts in a big, horse owners swap meet.
Participants can not only sell their saddle and bridle, but the horse that goes with them as well. For just $18, would-be sellers can bring a horse and have use of the arena to show the animal’s abilities. Twenty bucks buys a trailer space with electricity for other commercial vendors.
Everything from tack to horseshoe nail jewelry to cosmetics will be offered with two dozens vendors already signed up to participate.
In addition, Desert Pines Equine Center will be on hand. Desert Pines provides all medical care associated with bringing rescued horses back to full health.
Admission to the public is free and the Chuck Wagon gourmet trailer will be on hand to feed hungry swappers. In fact, ten percent of the Chuck Wagon’s sales will be donated to L.E.A.N.
Half the proceeds from the fun-filled event will go directly to L.E.A.N. to help offset costs associated with the care of the rescued horses.
For those who are unable to attend the Giant Tack Swap, donations are accepted on-line via the All Vegas Horses web site. Donors can choose to sponsor medical exams, farrier work, stall bedding or any of numerous choices to support the work done by L.E.A.N.’s all volunteer staff.
