This week’s SuicideGirl Gamer of the Week is Morrigan Suicide. I sat down with Morrigan to talk about her favorite games, who she thinks is the hottest video game character (which had a very surprising answer), and she even shares one of her biggest real life fears that sometimes carries over into video games.
How did you first get into modeling?
It was an art project by Niklas Henrikczon from Nimphidia. They saw my picture online and flew me over for a modeling gig featuring strong women in mythology. I portrayed Cirke and stood naked for hours in a big field filled with pigs on a stormy winter day, it was very memorable. It was that picture that got SuicideGirls interested in me when I applied and that made them contact me in 2005 to shoot my first set.
So what made you choose your SuicideGirls nickname? It didn’t have anything to do with Morrigan from Dragon Age, did it?
No, I chose my name the same year I became a model for SuicideGirls, 2006, way before Dragon Age. It did confuse me when I started playing Dragon Age, though. I almost always name my characters Morrigan in games and suddenly there in an NPC named Morrigan who is a big part of the story and looks a lot like me. Perhaps they owe me royalties?
It’s really a homage to my Irish heritage and my interest in mythology. Ever since I was very young history, legends, religion, and myths have been interesting to me.
Morrigan is considered a goddess of battle, strife, and sovereignty. I had another choice for a nickname, Cirke from the Greek mythology, but ultimately I decided to go with Morrigan due to the Irish link.
What is your favorite video game genre?
It’s a close call between strategy games such as StarCraft, Warcraft, Civilization, SimCity, Transport Tycoon, and Heroes of Might and Magic or roleplaying games such as Arcanum, Baldurs Gate, Old School Final Fantasy, Dragon Age, and Fallout. The RPG genre will have to win this one.
I always ended up being Protoss and building mass carriers when playing StarCraft online. Did you have a go-to strategy?
I prefer both Terran and Zerg to Protoss because Protoss are the most evolved and I always seem to root for or choose what I perceive to be the underdog even if I know all three have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Right now I’m trying to find my own style of playing. I’m a planner so I think I’ll focus on Terrans even if Zerg have a special place in my heart. With Zerg, it tends to be more about speed and offense and I prefer planning and a good defense before I attack. Going all-in and leaving things unprotected makes me very nervous!
If you had to pick just one game to call your all-time favorite, what would it be?
I started gaming on the Amiga 500 and my introduction to humorous games and love for all things silly came from LucasArts’ Monkey Island. There have been many games since then that I love but you never forget your first so that would have to be it. Wow, thought it would be way harder to choose just one!
What are you currently playing these days?
I’m actually between games right now. I do game everyday but I don’t have a main focus (or obsession) right now. Waiting for a few games to be released or to be made. I’m trying to help fund games I want to have made through a page called Kickstarter. Right now my focus on the site is a point and click horror game called “Asylum.”
I play a bit of Halo on Xbox 360. On the PC I play Fallout, a few retro amiga games, a bit of casual StarCraft, and the new XCOM game. I also fiddle around a bit with my Nintendo DS and kick ass in Tekken on the PS3.
If you could actually live in the world of any video game, which game would it be and why?
I am a comfortable person so living with poverty, plague, and religious fanatics doesn’t appeal to me, so most RPG worlds are sadly ruled out. Fallout would have been a contender but radiation and the looming threat of mutants is a big negative!
I’d have to choose the Pokémon world. Plus sides include computers, television, cute pets, no deaths, and pleasant climate. It’s a life similar to this one, just a bit cuter! This makes me sound very girly and not very adventurous but hey, I’d rather be comfortable and happy than battle dragons with real risk of death. I prefer to have save files to go back to or extra lives to use in those cases.
The world of Pokémon, eh? I could see that actually being pretty fun. Which Pokémon would you own?
Chikorita, for no reason other than it’s cute. It’s not over-hyped like Pikachu and it’s not a water Pokémon. I would never choose water Pokémon due to my irrational fear of all things underwater. That fear makes it a bit complicated to get through games that suddenly need you to do under water quests or missions but I manage.
In your opinion, who is the hottest video game character?
I have always had a soft spot for Christie Monteiro from Tekken, but she is a bit one-sided. Great boobs but lacking in personality. There’s Therese and Jeanette (Tourette) Voerman from Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines and honestly, who can resist a slutty evil vampire in schoolgirl clothing? We have Kerrigan from StarCraft who has looks, brains, and a very interesting backstory. Duke Nukem (the original one of course…not the remake) based on his no-nonsense attitude and one-liners. I also had a thing going for Alistair from Dragon Age but that bastard dumped me to be king so I’m over it.
Okay, it has to be Kerrigan. She is the whole package, even as an assimilated Zerg. She has more balls than even Duke Nukem. Blizzard really succeeded in creating an interesting character with her.
Are you into cosplaying at all? *cough* You should do a Morrigan cosplay. *cough*
I am! Would love to do a Morrigan cosplay. I need to invest in a sewing machine, buying ready made items from eBay and costume shops is cheating and for tacky Halloween parties, not for when trying to pay homage to something you like.
Where can fans find more of you?
