When you think of spring time, you probably think of spring break, spring training and spring cleaning. (Well, maybe not spring cleaning. Who wants to think about cleaning all the time?) But, for me, I think of warmer weather. It’s always so nice to put away the coats and sweaters and break out the shorts and flip flops.
With the change of weather and return of warmer temperatures, it means some regular maintenance should be in store for your air conditioning system. It just finished a couple of months in heat mode, but some TLC is needed to make sure it’s ready to go to keep you cool. So here is a spring checklist for your AC system.
Get a Tune Up
Energy Star and air conditioning companies recommend a tune up twice a year. You’re supposed to get one in the spring time (right before your AC goes into full-time cooling mode) and another one in the fall (before fill-time heating mode). Most air conditioner tune ups will check all your connections and fluid levels to make sure your air conditioner is in tip top shape heading into the warmer months. You can get a tune up for less than $75 through most local AC companies.
Change Your Filter
Filter maintenance is a year round project, so of course it’s going to be on a spring checklist. Most local AC companies recommend you check your air filter once a month. If it’s dirty, go ahead and put in a fresh air filter. During the spring time, you should be able to go two months between air filter replacements. But it’s always important to check it once a month to make sure it’s clean. The last thing you want is a dirty air filter leading to a drain on efficiency and possible failure of your air conditioner, right?
Change the Direction of Your Ceiling Fan(s)
If you turned the switch on your ceiling fans to make them rotate the other direction (clockwise), which pushes warm air down to the room. So it would make sense that you’d want to switch that back to counter clockwise for the spring and summer. Don’t forget – turn off your ceiling fans when you leave a room. They do nothing to change the room temperature. They simply make the room feel cooler to your skin. So it wastes energy to leave ceiling fans running when no one is in the room.
No one wants to be left with a non-functioning air conditioner, especially as it starts to warm up outside. So knock out the three items on this spring checklist and get your AC in working order!
