The Last of Us looks to be one of the most exciting PS3 exclusive games that will release in 2013. This post-apocalyptic story will take place 20 years after the spread of a cordyceps-type fungus that killed millions. Nature has been gradually taking back the abandoned cities and towns of the world and the surviving humans are kept within quarantined areas that are completely under control of the US military.
The main protagonists of the story are Joel, a take-no-crap tough guy who will most likely end up having a heart of gold and Ellie, a young girl who Joel promises to smuggle out of the city. They will battle their way through the USA against other survivors living on the outskirts of the quarantine zones and the infected which are former humans whose whole purpose is now to spread the fungal infection. All of this while attempting to avoid the military who want to catch Ellie and keep her under their thumb. From this we can only guess that Ellie is very important to humanity for some reason and if the trailer is any clue, it should be a fun ride finding out exactly why this little girl is so significant.
Now down to the game-play! The Last of Us is tagged as a Survival Horror Action-Adventure game and boy was that a mouthful. You will play as Joel and Ellie is controlled by AI as she follows you protect her using a mix of gun fighting and melee combat against your foes. The game is played in third person; much like the Uncharted series and the developers have introduced a new feature called Dynamic Stealth.
Dynamic Stealth means you can use different techniques and strategies at any given time to approach situations as you see best. Enemies will react differently depending on the situation and this promises to add a real depth and unpredictability to the game. It will be exciting to see how different everyone can approach the same situations.
