Sexting as a form of Foreplay
Most people would agree that communication is rather important in any relationship be it business, personal, romantic, or family. It’s always better to know how someone else feels about something, and for you to know that someone else is listening to and respecting your feelings. In order to achieve such effective communication both parties have to be willing to participate in the process. Communication skills are developed very early in life from the time we are able to convey to our parents the need for food or for nurturing. Also, the times when we need simple reassuring that we have been heard or that we’ve gotten our point across.
While it is important to be heard and sharpen our communication skills it becomes equally important to develop our ability to hear others as well. Often times we focus so strongly on being heard that we forget to listen; hence the saying we have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we talk. What is also developed during these stages is our reputation for the way in which we communicate. There are people who are known for their great oratorical skills and others that are known for their great listening skills. Finding a balance of the two is the key to successful communication.
Communicating in the 21st century has changed so much because of technology. First there was postal mail, then the telephone, next the internet, followed by the cell phone, then texting, now twitter, facebook and instagram. All of these entities have made it almost impossible not to remain in constant contact with others every waking moment. These social networks give you the means to connect with people you know, people you don’t know personally and people all over the world.
Modern-day technology has created platforms for people to talk about things they would never speak of in person. The most quiet and boring wallflower finds his/her voice through the technology, (i.e. the internet or texting.) The internet allows for just enough anonymity that unless you make an egregious offense or are part of a crime towards another person you could go on for a very long time without being identified. It has been said the drunken person speaks what the sober mind thinks, that same argument could be made for communicating via the internet or texting. It’s difficult for the even rudest of people to say in person the things they are willing to type and send behind a computer or cell phone.
Sharing information and messages via the cellular phone and the internet amongst friends is fine but one might agree we’ve gone too far by sending naked pictures, or have we? The definition of pornography includes photographs yet we don’t acknowledge it when sexting.
In conclusion, communication is the key to a healthy relationship. Instead of sexting, just a simple flirtatious text in the middle of the day can warrant a really good night with the person in which you’re involved.
