On Thursday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) introduced her latest gun ban legislation, telling reporters in Washington, D.C. the purpose is to “dry up the supply of these weapons over time.”
According to Feinstein, the bill she introduced prohibits the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of so-called “assault weapons” and large capacity ammunition feeding devices that can accept more than ten rounds. The bill, she added, would not affect hunting or sporting firearms.
The bill, however, includes much more than rifles. According to a lengthy list posted by the Daily Caller, the bill would ban over 150 types of weapons, including handguns and shotguns.
Feinstein said the proposal protects 2,200 “specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes.”
“They are by make and model exempted from the legislation,” she said. “Finally, the bill subjects existing or grandfathered weapons to a background check in the event the weapon is sold or transferred,” she added.
The California Democrat, who has sought limits on the Second Amendment for years, said she “tried” to recognize legal hunting rights and legal defense rights.
“We have tried to recognize the right of a citizen to legally possess a weapon,” she said. “No weapon is taken from anyone.”
The NRA, however, isn’t buying Feinstein’s claim, and sees her bill as another attack on the Constitution.
“Senator Feinstein has been trying to ban guns from law-abiding citizens for decades,” the group said in a statement. “It’s disappointing but not surprising that she is once again focused on curtailing the Constitution instead of prosecuting criminals or fixing our broken mental health system. The American people know gun bans do not work and we are confident Congress will reject Senator Feinstein’s wrong-headed approach.”
“If I could’ve gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them — Mr. and Mrs. America, turn ’em all in — I would’ve done it. I could not do that, the votes weren’t here,” she said in 1995.
Despite support from the administration, several red-state Democrats have expressed reservations about the bill, the Washington Free Beacon said.
In addition to Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV), “Sens. Joe Manchin (W.V.), Angus King (Maine), and Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) have either been noncommittal on an assault weapons ban or have expressed concerns about potential gun legislation,” the Free Beacon said.
