President Obama made history in 2008 when he became the first African-American president in the history of the United States. While the majority of the country was pleased with the outcome of the election, many on the far right are still coming up with excuses for President Obama’s historic election.
Ever since President Obama was elected in November of 2008, the Republican party and conservatives across the country have come up with any reason they can to push an agenda of fear and hate toward the president. Whether it’s outrageous accusations about President Obama’s birth certificate, inaccurate information about health care reform, “Obamacare,” or his place of birth, the far right in America have pulled out all the stops in their attempt to discredit the president.
One of the leading voices of hatred against President Obama is the mouthpiece of the conservative movement, radio show host Rush Limbaugh. During his radio show this week, Limbaugh accused many Americans of voting for President Obama to “erase slavery.”
“He’s the first black president. A lot of people voted for Obama in 2008 because that vote did a number of things, individually. That vote made those people feel good about themselves. Those people, when they voted for Obama, said, ‘I am not a racist, and nobody can ever say I am!’
That’s number one. Number two: That vote was gonna fix the race problem. It was gonna erase slavery. It was gonna eliminate all the horrible things in this nation’s past. Finally we were going to, as a nation, speak up and say in one voice, “We are no longer racist! We are no longer a slave state.” Then, the blank canvas aspect of Obama. He stood for anything you wanted him be. Those people are not going to admit that they made a mistake.”
While President Obama’s election in 2008 was many things, one thing it wasn’t was an attempt to eliminate slavery. Rush Limbaugh, Fox News and other right-wing propaganda outlets continue to push false ideas and theories to take down the president, but the American people don’t seem to be buying it.
