It is official. Illinois State Senator Toi Hutchinson has dropped from the race for the 2nd Illinois Congressional District race on Sunday. With the news, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle endorsed Robin Kelly.
Toi Hutchinson said in a statement that “I am ending my campaign for Congress today and throwing my support behind Robin Kelly. I urge those who have been supporting me to now work hard for Robin over the next 9 days. I have said from day one that this campaign is not about me or any one person; it’s about moving America forward and standing with President Obama to create new jobs and safer communities.”
In a stunning development that was first reported by Rich Miller’s Capitol Fax that Toi Hutchinson (D-40) would withdraw.
A top source close to Sen. Toi Hutchinson’s congressional campaign confirmed widespread rumors tonight that Hutchinson will likely drop out of the 2nd District special primary race on Sunday.
The reasons are many, including Mayor Bloomberg’s decision to point his massive super PAC right at Hutchinson while backing rival Robin Kelly.
Robin Kelly welcomed the news. “Today is a good day for the Second Congressional District. While Senator Hutchinson and I haven’t agreed on everything, we have a strong mutual respect, share a passion for public service and dedication to the people in Chicago and the Southland. I’m pleased to have her on our team.”
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle also endorsed Robin Kelly in view of Toi Hutchinson’s withdrawal. “Robin Kelly is a strong leader and will thrive in Congress. I wish her all the luck in the world and I know we will work closely together on issues of mutual importance to our Southland constituents.”
Kelly looks forward to working with her former boss, Toni Preckwinkle, who is a strong proponent for legislation to reduce gun violence. “I am excited that Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has joined our campaign. She has been a strong voice in the fight against gun violence in the county. In Congress, I will work with Senator Hutchinson, President Preckwinkle and other leaders throughout our district to get guns off our streets and bring jobs to our neighborhoods.”
On Friday, the Bloomberg PAC endorsed Robin Kelly on the strength of her anti-NRA stance, as Robin Kelly has an “F” rating from the NRA. The news of the Bloomberg PAC endorsement was picked up by most major news outlets, as this Illinois special election has suddenly become ground zero for the gun debate. Time magazine picked up the story. So did the Washington Post and Politico.
Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun Times also reported the same, also citing the onslaught of another Bloomberg’s PAC ad buy of an additional $730,335.95, bringing the total spent to over two million dollars. The Bloomberg-controlled PAC, the Independence USA PAC, has been bombarding the Chicago-area airwaves with a relentless attack on former Rep. Debbie Halvorson and her “A” rating from the NRA.
