On Feb. 20, in stormy conditions, the New England Revolution conceded a pair of late goals by Real Salt Lake for a 3-2 loss in the MLS preseason Desert Diamond Cup tournament at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
New England will now miss the championship final and face the New York Red Bulls in the tournament’s consolation game on Saturday night.
Stormy night in Tucson
The pouring rain and swirling snow made the pitch less than optimal and halted the game midway through the first half. Soon after the match resumed, Sebastian Velasquez let fly with a 25-yard drive and Devon Sandoval buried the uncontested rebound from close range for Real Salt Lake’s go-ahead goal.
The Revolution made mass substitutions in the second half and leveled the score in just five minutes. Rookie Andrew Farrell, who started at right back but moved to center back after the break, played a long ball for Diego Fagundez down the left wing and the young forward found Andy Dorman, who finished from close range.
Seven minutes later, New England took a 2-1 lead through A.J. Soares off a set piece. Unsigned rookie Gabe Latigue whipped in a free kick from the right channel and Soares sent a glancing header into the far upper corner.
But RSL found opportunities in the final three minutes and scored twice for the final result and the ticket to the final.
Alvaro Saborio pulled RSL level with a left-footed drive into the upper corner in the 88th minute and Khari Stephenson blasted a low drive past Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth in stoppage time.
