You know a major girl fight is not too far off when the latest episode is titled ‘bad friend’.
Hannah, looking for work, meets with an editor of a blog called Jazz Hate, who offers her a freelance blogger opportunity. She is told to write about a personal experience, like go “have a threesome with strangers you meet off of Craiglist. Or go on a cocaine binge. Just an idea.” Hannah, eager to please, jumps on the idea and scores cocaine from her downstairs neighbour Laird, who she suspects is a drug addict. She is going to get high and write the crap out of this blog.
Meanwhile Marnie, who is now a hostess at what seems to be an crusty old man’s bar, crosses paths with the pretentious pompous artist Booth, whom she met last season. He takes her to his apartment and puts her inside one of his art installations, a small enclosed space with screens showing crying babies, dying animals and war. She becomes agitated and screams for Booth, who is out of ear shot checking his emails and mutilating a teddy bear. He finally lets her out and Marnie, clearly distraught, declares “What the f***, man? What the f***?” . I thought this would be her moment of clarity, when she would call him out on being an egocentric and pretentious dick, but after he hugs her, she declares “You’re so f****** talented.” Marnie is clearly still lost.
Hannah is on a coke binge with her new bestie and roommate Elijah. They go to a club and dance, Hannah swaps shirts with a stranger (she ends up braless in a mesh tank top) and snorts more cocaine off a toilet seat. With all the honestly flowing between Hannah and Elijah, he confesses to sleeping with Marnie. Hannah, fighting hard to contain her hurt, declares “I was meant to be your last!”
They end up at a drugstore, where Laird suddenly appears and confesses that he has been following Hannah as he is worried about her doing coke. She gets a text from Marnie saying that she is at Booths apartment, so, with Laird in tow, the three show up at Booth’s and Hannah rips into Marnie for being a bad friend. She delivers an incredible coherent monologue for a girl who has just done what seems to be massive amounts of cocaine and shots at the bar. ”We could keep being friends just as long as you know you’re a bad one!” She declares Marnie a horrible friend for being with Elijah and not telling her. Marnie stands quiet as Hannah makes her repeat, out loud, that she is the bad friend. Satisfied with this forced admission she leaves with Laird in tow, and Marnie runs to the bathroom to vomit.
Laird and Hannah live at the same building, and with Hannah half out of her mind, you can pretty much guess how the rest of the night plays out. With all the strange declarations and noises that Laird is making, it seems as if he may have thought that this kind of intimacy was never ever going to happen to him again.
