Inspired by Bill McCoy, the legendary rum runner who set the standard for quality, honesty and reliability among his nefarious peers during the dark days of American prohibition, the Real McCoy Spirits corporation of Mystic, Connecticut today announced their Real McCoy rum — an authentic, boutique crafted spirit of genuine character.
Bailey Pryor researched, developed and produced a documentary about the Real McCoy of the roaring twenties for PBS. His feature film script has been purchased by Universal Studios and Bailey is going to the Oscars to celebrate the overwhelming interest his documentary has generated.
During the process of documenting the life and legend of William McCoy, Bailey became inspired to develop a cane spirit worthy of the man who set the standards of high quality during the golden era of rum runners. He contracted another legendary figure in the rum world, Richard Seale of Four Square distillery in Barbados, to craft an authentic rum blend that would have made Bill McCoy proud.
The resulting product — The Real McCoy Rum — will debut in early 2013 in U.S. select markets with a commitment to respect and honor the legacy of its namesake. Plans for speakeasy parties and “McCoy’s Crew” posters and handouts are underway, along with a notable social media campaign to inform and entertain the next generation about this golden era — and specifically about the man who’s name, nearly a hundred years later, remains synonymous with genuine, authentic products.
A golden amber color defines the appearance of this five year old rum. With medium viscosity, fine legs appear on the tasting glass suggesting a well aged spirit. Initial aromas of honey, oak and caramel are followed by vanilla and baking spices, dried fruit and a touch of pepper. On the palate a brief hint of light sweetness gives way to a classic dry aged bouquet of oak, almond, spice and vanilla with a warm, lingering finish.
The Real McCoy is a fine sipper on the rocks and a robust component that brings veritable Bajan rum flavor to classic cocktails.
Original drinks recipes using the Real McCoy Rum have been developed by Anthony DeSerio which reflect the height of the celebrated American bartending era — a time when most of the classic and vintage cocktail recipes were introduced by the best mixologists in the world using genuine spirits from the islands.
The Real McCoy Rum will carry a retail price of $28.99 for a standard 750ml bottle.
