Formed just back in 2009, Canadian quartet Young Empires have already gained national recognition.
NYLON claims “Young Empires’ glossy production and funked up rhythms, reminds us of the Rapture’s dance-ready grooves…They’re too good.”
Last year the band released their debut EP in Canada (soon to be out in the US), “Wake All My Youth,” featuring singles “White Doves” and “We Don’t Sleep Tonight.” Check out the amazing video for “White Doves” below.
I had the chance to chat with singer and frontman Matthew Vlahovich; he told me a little about inspirations, embarrassing moments, and the meaning behind their name.
Amber: How did the four of you meet and decide to form a band?
Matthew: Jake, Aaron and I all met on Craigslist in the fall of 2009. Oddly enough, it was our common non-musical interests like food, fashion and movies that we connected on.
A: When did you realize you wanted to make music for a living?
M: Well, it’s very difficult to turn down promoters flying you to Stockholm, Bogota, and Paris.
A: What’s the meaning behind the name Young Empires?
M: All empires seek global domination in some form or another. Our goal is to create music that resonates with our common global consciousness and have fans in every corner of the globe.
A: Who does most of the songwriting? What are some of the things that usually inspires that person?
M: Songwriting has been a shared and communal endeavour thus far. We pull inspiration from the cities we visit and the people we meet.
A: What’s your favorite part about playing live?
M: Connecting with our fans in the live arena is the most rewarding part of this business.
A: Most embarrassing moment on stage?
M: In San Francisco we blew the power twice during our set. That was a little embarrassing.
A: If you could go back to vacation in a city you’ve played in, where would it be?
M: For me it would have to be Stockholm. In the summer the sun never goes down, so everyone parties all day n’ nite (like that Kid Cudi song).
A: What do you hope the future holds?
M: We are releasing our debut EP in America on Votiv Records and are happy to have a new home. We will be touring in the US this spring. Follow us on Facebook to find out about tour dates.
Keep up with Young Empires online!
