The final episode of “Private Practice” aired Tuesday, Jan. 22 and brought closure to the story lines of all the major characters. “In Which We Say Goodbye” even included two weddings!
Addison and Jake
The promo for the series finale of “Private Practice” seemed to hint at the idea that Addison was having second thoughts on her wedding day and might not go through with the ceremony. In reality, she was simply not ready to go down the aisle until her best friend Naomi arrived. Naomi arrived and the ceremony was beautiful. Addison had her son and the man of her dreams at long last. Jake even made up with his daughter and gave her his blessing to date the older man he has been upset about all season.
Cooper and Charlotte
The series finale episode takes place about a month after the birth of the triplets and we see Charlotte has returned to work and Cooper is fulfilling his promise to be Mr. Mom by quitting his job and staying home with the babies. Loving his kids, he faces the trials and tribulations of new parenthood by confessing to Violet that he thinks they team up against him. Finally he tells Charlotte he hasn’t showered in five days because the kids are so demanding. He wants to hire a nanny or he could turn to playground sex with some other new. Always one to see the reality of the situation, Charlotte agrees and the family is happy and whole.
Naomi and Addison
During Naomi’s visit for Addison’s wedding, she has a one-nighter with Sam, whom she still has chemistry with. Three months later, Naomi returns to visit Addison because she is in town for a conference. She tells Addison she is pregnant and Addison assumes the baby is Fife’s. Naomi asks why Addison and Sam broke up and Addison explains it was over Addison’s desire to have a baby – something Sam adamantly didn’t want. Later, Naomi tells Addison that Fife is no longer in the picture and the baby is Sam’s. Sworn to secrecy, Addison goes to Sam and tells him the reason none of his post-Naomi relationships have worked because he is still in love with Naomi. She also tells him Naomi still loves him.
Sheldon and Miranda
Sheldon and Miranda are still reveling in their new found love. They attend Addison and Jakes’s wedding and everyone loves Miranda. Later, she collapses and is rushes to the hospital while having a seizure. She and Sheldon are told it’s the beginning of the end and things will be going downhill from here. Miranda checks herself out of the hospital against medical advice. She knows what is in store and doesn’t want to spend her last days there. She wants Sheldon to walk away, leave her, so he won’t see the end of her life unfold.
He returns to the office devastated but after some sage advice from Jake, he quits the practice and goes in search of Miranda. He finds her at her favorite spot in the park. He confesses his love for her and says they were brought together by this thing and their paths are now one. He is going to love through to the bitter end she deserves that. Their last scene together is of them on beach chairs, looking out at a blue ocean while sipping drinks with umbrella in them.
Amelia and James
This couple got little air time in the “Private Practice” series finale. They had a good run over the course of the season and we were left with them acknowledging as they watched the weddings unfold that it would be their turn one day.
Violet dealt with a long term patient whom she felt was ready to end therapy. The patient was reluctant to let go of her apron strings but eventually did, causing Violet to shed a tear of joy and sorrow. Violet’s other endeavor, her second book, is finally completed. She tells the crew at the office that it is about joy and friendship and overcoming and about their moments in the kitchen. When asked for the title, she says “Private Practice” and the credits role as the gang debates the merits of the title.
Sam and Naomi
The biggest surprise in the “Private Practice” series finale was the turn of events between Sam and Naomi. After learning about Naomi’s feelings for him, Sam barges into her conference to tell her that Addison told him everything and that he loves her. She responds that it is his just his sense of obligation over the pregnancy. Sam is stunned because Addison hadn’t told him that. When Naomi realizes he loves her and it had nothing to do with the coming baby, she is elated. Their story arc closes with their wedding.
While we are sad to see them go, at least we left them knowing their lives, for the most part are well in hand and everyone is happy…for the moment. Farwell, “Private Practice” and thanks for making us laugh and cry.
