Update: Tornadoes confirmed to have hit South Mississippi in Jefferson Davis and Covington counties
Several possible tornadoes caused damage from East Texas to Mississippi and left one person dead, according to emergency management officials.
The National Weather Service said early Friday that they will be sending survey teams to confirm whether significant damage caused Thursday afternoon and evening in Sabine, Polk and Cherokee counties in eastern Texas, Concordia Parish in east-central Louisiana, and Jefferson Davis and Covington counties in southern Mississippi, were from tornadoes or straight-line winds.
The severe storms that impacted eastern Texas between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. CST Thursday, caused damage to more than three dozen homes with numerous trees uprooted and blown down.
KYTX-TV reported Louise Stringer, 74, was killed in the Strickland Crossing area of Sabine County after a tree fell across her trailer home. Nearby neighbors say Stringer’s sister-in-law, who was also inside the residence, was injured.
In Concordia Parish, a mobile home was knocked off its foundation and damaged and the roof was blown off another home, according to the Natchez Democrat newspaper. There were no reported injuries with this storm that hit the area just after 5 p.m. CST Thursday.
Mississippi emergency management officials reported several homes received significant damage with numerous trees downed near the Greens Creek Community in Jefferson Davis County, just after 10:30 p.m. CST Thursday.
A home under construction reportedly had its windows blown out with a moving car pushed off the road as a possible tornado moved through near Collins in Covington County, just before 11 p.m. CST Thursday. A barn also had much of its roof ripped off.
No injuries were reported in either Jefferson Davis or Covington.
These severe storms and or possible tornadoes were spawn within a narrow area of warm, moist and unstable air that surged north out ahead of a cold front that was moving across the region.
