Every year, the Poe Museum hosts a party to honor one of America’s most popular literary icons. This year is the 204th celebration and it coincides with another important milestone that Poe enthusiasts will surely want to celebrate.
2013 marks the 170th anniversary of the printing of The Tell-Tale Heart, one of Poe’s most well-known and beloved pieces, and this year’s party hosted by the Poe Museum in Richmond, VA on January 19, will include a special unveiling to coincide with the event.
The day’s festivities will include the first public showing of a first edition copy of The Tell-Tale Heart. The piece first appeared in the inaugural issue of Boston magazine The Pioneer in January 1843, for which Poe was paid $10 upon publication. The Museum acquired the copy this past November, and it will be one of the big draws at this year’s party to honor the author.
Other events taking part during the festivities include a walking tour of local sites connected to Poe, a reading of The Raven, live music, and a Victorian seance with an actress portraying Sarah Helen Whitman, one of Poe’s fiancees, who will attempt to contact the spirit of the author himself.
With visitors from around the globe taking part, the party grows every year, and with this new addition to the museum, attendees can continue to celebrate Poe’s birthday and get to see this newly-acquired cherished artifact.
The festival runs from noon until after midnight at The Poe Museum in Richmond.
