‘The heart is a lonely hunter’ was directed by David M. Barrett. Writers were Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Last episode in StoryBrooke, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) found out why Graham (Jamie Dornan) wanted her to work late.
He was paying Regina a visit. In her bedroom. Emma catches him sneaking out the of the Mayor’s house. Whatever feelings she had for him were trampled in that moment. Emma is still pissed at Graham. He wants to explain. But she doesn’t want to hear it. He tells her he doesn’t feel anything for Regina (Lana Parrilla).
To prove the point, he kisses Emma. This then causes some of his FTL memories to return. His spirit guide and kin is a wolf. The wolf leads him around town giving him clues to his past. After talking to MM (Ginnifer Goodwin), Graham seeks out Henry (Jared S. Gilmore). Graham spills the beans.
Henry now knows Graham was the Huntsman. Who tried to kill Snow White for the Evil Queen. When he didn’t kill the princess EQ took his heart instead. That act allowed her to control him. One clue brings Graham and Emma to Henry Mills’ tomb. Regina’s father. Fists fly between the ladies. Then Graham tells Regina it’s over.
She doesn’t take it very well. She enters her EQ vault hidden under the tomb. She locates her stash of stolen glowing hearts. Pulls out Graham’s and crushes it. Graham and Emma have a tender moment before he dies. He got all of his memories back before the end. Emma is devastated.
In pre-curse FTL, the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) pretends to mourn King Leopold. It’s all an act. So Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) won’t know she’s next. The EQ hires an outsider the Huntsman for the assassination. Snow realizes what is about to happen and flees.
When he finds her she’s composing a letter to her stepmother. The Huntsman reads it then decides to let her live. He kills a deer and gives the heart to EQ. But she discovers the lie and makes him one of her new slaves. It’s obey her or die.
The good: Finally a Graham centric episode. Great performance by Jamie Dornan. If Graham is dead, will we see more of the Huntsman? Jamie pulled on the heartstrings with this one. The audience got proof Regina retained her FTL memories of being the Evil Queen.
The bad: If the EQ wanted someone ruthless, why did she pick the Huntsman? He’s known as FTL version of the “Crying Freeman”. He sheds tears for each of his kills. She’s surprised he allowed Snow to escape. Why did Graham have to die?
The ugly: Learning Graham and Regina are lovers. Sometimes they do the deed while Henry is home. Regina killing Graham to protect her secret. And to keep Emma from having him.
