Deluxe Distribution has been on fire the last few years and one of it’s most popular brands is Real Skateboards. Real Skateboards was started by skateboard entrepreneur Fousto Vitello and two former Powell Peralta riders Jim Theibaud and Tommy Guerrero. Tommy was the token street guy in an all vert Bones Brigade. To the millions of kids with no access to a vert ramp Tommy’s street skating in the early Bones videos made him the most relate-able member of the Bones Brigade and ultimately one of the most popular. Using his talent and individuality Tommy helped to steer skateboarding into the more street dominated art form it is today. Tommy Guerreo truly is one of skateboarding’s most authentic and original legends. – Jason Chapman The National Skateboarding Examiner
“Tommy Guerrero accepted the Legend Award. Not many people can say they revolutionized the world of skateboarding, but this San Francisco icon, top shelf Bones Brigader, co-founder of Real Skateboards, and first ever “street” pro, has left an incredible mark on the world of skateboarding. Roll Forever.” – TransWorld SkateBOARDING
Carlsbad, CA –TransWorld SKATEboarding is proud to announce Tommy Guerrero as the recipient of this year’s Legend Award, and will be honoring him this Wednesday, February 27 in Hollywood at the 15th Annual TransWorld SKATEboarding Awards presented by New Era. The Legend Award sets out to officialy recognize, acknowledge, and honor those who have forever shifted the legacy of what it means to be a skateboarder.
As a top shelf member of the Bones Brigade during the height of the ’80s boom, Tommy basically became the face of “streetstyle” at a time when that very concept was about to turn skateboarding on its head. Born and raised in San Francisco, Tommy put the city’s now infamous hills and unique terrain on the map for skateboarding. His part in Powell Peralta’s 1985 video Future Primitive was not only revolutionary, but hugely influential to the sport of skateboarding. As the first official “street pro” in skateboarding, Tommy’s free-flowing improvisational style and creative use of the San Francisco concrete, set the stage for modern street skating.
“The San Francisco avenues and Tommy Guerrero were a match made in heaven,” comments TransWorld SKATEboarding Editor At Large Skin Phillips. “Those lines look as relevant today as they did decades ago. He is a true pioneer, even when skateboarding, and especially street, were in the dark ages.”
Tommy’s contributions to skateboarding are innumerable—both in front of the scenes and behind. He’s been credited as the first to ollie into a grab (and consequently put an end to jump ramp early grabs) as well as the kickflip backside grab on a miniramp. In 1991, with the help of longtime friends Jim Thiebaud and Fousto Vitello, Tommy started Real Skateboards out of Deluxe Distribution, leaving the Bones Brigade. Real Skateboards has now grown to be one of today’s most respected and influential brands in the industry.
Tommy’s focus remains on keeping skateboarding raw. Never turning his back on skating, Tommy continues to play an active role at Deluxe Distribution and additionally juggles his time as a professional musician, skateboarder, and proud father. Roll forever. Congratulations Tommy Guerrero.
