It’s no secret that crime seems to be up, but in Oakland, California, crime has become so out of control that some residents are not even bothering to call the police anymore, according to a report by CBS: SF Bay Area published Feb. 26, 2013.
Thanks to budget cuts, The Oakland Police Department is stretched so thin, and crime so high, they are unable to respond to all of the calls, much less in a timely manner. In fact, as reported by CBS:SF Bay Area, one resident was the victim of a robbery twice in the same night: The second time being while he was waiting for police to arrive following the first.
According to The Wall Street Journal Online, murders in Oakland are at the highest they’ve been since 2006 and up 22% from just last year. Burglaries are up 43% and robberies are up 24%.
Crime experts and city officials are struggling to find a reason for the sudden rise in crime. However, residents are fed up and tired of depending on law enforcement, government or anyone else to protect them. They have taken matters in their own hands, arming themselves and patrolling the streets. Many residents state that they do not feel safe, even in their own homes, without being armed.
Try telling these residents that gun control will prevent crime. They are bound to disagree.
