Last night’s episode of “NY ER” titled “Burn Job” brought us to the battlefield that is the emergency room of New York Presbyterian Hospital to meet with the doctors and nurses who work every day to save lives. Their caring and consideration are the forefront of their jobs. Sometimes they work under excruciating conditions, but the series displays how their day can change at a moment’s notice.
These episodes are narrated by Dr. Mehmet Oz, who introduces the viewers to the very walls where he trained. He interjects information throughout the series. Discovery Fit & Health took a summer replacement series and revamped it into a new series for fans whose natural curiosity brings them into the walls of busy hospitals.
This episode opens as an ear-piercing scream comes from behind a curtain; a man is having a catheter inserted in his penis. Another patient; an elderly woman who had been run over by a cab. Her mangled legs were being tended to, but she was calm as could be. Her both ankles were broken and when asked if she wanted more morphine for pain, she said she was not hurting that much.
Next is a man with his face terribly burned by a laser. They immediately gave him morphine and reported it as possible medical malpractice. The screen had the words reading that after just four days, he was released and made a full recovery.
The loudspeaker reports that an ambulance is three minutes away with another patient who fell from a scaffolding and has a broken femur.
A ten-year-old boy with a piece of meat stuck down his throat is the next patient. X-rays do not show where it is, and fortunately, his breathing is not affected. They give him a contrast solution to swallow to see where it is, but he vomits it up before the procedure is completed. Mission accomplished.
Next, an aggressive patient refuses to have a finger stick to check his blood because they did not give him Cheerios for breakfast. The nurse calls an attending to give them the information, oh, there is also an order for scrotal support for the same patient. Would you suspect that the patient would let the nurse touch his testicles, when she could not even touch his finger? The nurse suspects a prank.
Next all interns are called to an area where a patient is bleeding out. There is blood all over, luckily they stop the bleeding before they have to take the patient to the operating room.
One of the nurses can take all the bodily fluids, bones sticking out and other gross messes she has seen; however, she hates bugs. A woman is on her way into the emergency room with bites all over her from her bed bug infested apartment. Eeek!
A man is brought in with difficulty breathing and an elevated temperature. He has a problem with his heart and is brought to the cardiac care unit.
A leaking aortic aneurism is being transferred from another hospital. The elderly woman is a pistol. She starts barking orders at the staff and demands privacy as she changes her clothing. While the doctors check her scan, it seems like the aneurism has closed without any further procedures.
