In this week’s “New Girl,” Nick and Jess finally kissed, and on Wednesday, Jan. 30, we joined in on a conference call with creator/executive producer/writer Liz Meriwether to discuss the big development and what it means for everyone going forward.
The aftermath of the kiss for Nick and Jess. The next “New Girl” episode, “Table 34,” picks up where “Cooler” left off, and you can expect some things to be resolved. For example, Jess is going to have to figure out whether or not she wants to be with Sam after that kiss with Nick. “It just kind of obviously rocks Jess’ world,” the EP explained. As for Nick, he “starts freaking out about what he’s done, and they both are just kind of grappling with how they kind of continue as friends the way they were.” So will they get together? They’re not ready for that, with each dealing with their feelings. And even though “they are attracted to each other,” that doesn’t make all the problems and obstacles in their way just disappear. “There’s a lot of tension that’s out in the open and everyone’s trying to figure out how they feel about each other,” Meriwether previewed. “The rest of the season is them fighting their feelings and fighting their attraction and trying to figure out what they really want out of each other.”
Why now? “It just felt right. We’d sort of gotten to a place where it felt like organically in their relationship, something like this could happen,” she told reporters, though the original draft for “Cooler” didn’t include the kiss. “I think we were all ready for Nick to step up to the plate. …Whether or not it was the trench coat…”
The loft dynamic. Expect to see how Winston and Schmidt react to the kiss not in “Table 34” but in the following episode, when “Schmidt digs up a No Nail oath that they all took when [Jess] moved into the loft where they all agreed not to nail her,” the EP teased. “Obviously Jess is mad about it, and Schmidt is just dealing with the fact that the loft dynamics have changed in his view.” Winston and Schmidt are going to “come down pretty hard against it,” with really strong opinions about it like they have about everything.
Cece and Schmidt’s struggles. The next episode sees the group head to an Indian marriage convention, where Cece is going to be trying to meet a nice Indian guy to marry. “She’s trying to fight her wild, crazy side and try to be more traditional,” Meriwether explained. However, at the same time, “she’s really fighting her attraction to Schmidt,” and the kiss Nick and Jess shared plays a role in that. After she hears about it, she’s “reminded how much she misses sex after spending a couple months going on dates set up by her mother and is really fighting her urge to jump Schmidt’s bones.” Both Cece and Schmidt will be struggling with their feelings even as they try to move on, and this is something that will play out throughout the rest of the season, including seeing if Cece actually does get married.
The other kiss. Nick and Jess weren’t the only ones who kissed in “Cooler”; Winston and Daisy did as well, and Brenda Song’s “tough love, almost coach for Winston” character is going to be sticking around, next appearing in the episode following “Table 34.”
Fun guest stars. The EP also spoke a bit about some upcoming guest stars, including Steve Howey (“Shameless”), coming in as “a football player who Winston is trying to become friends with and [whom] Jess is also interested in” and more of Nick’s family.
“New Girl” season 2 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on FOX. What did you think of the kiss?
