Don’t Panic! As the Earth is about to be destroyed by a Vogon Demolition fleet, making way for a new hyperspace bypass, Arthur Dent and his friend Ford Prefect escape. The two find themselves on a galactic voyage leading them to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
Peter Jones (The Book), Simon Jones (Arthur Dent), David Dixon (Ford Prefect), Sandra Dickinson (Trillian), Mark Wing-Davey (Beeblebrox), Stephen Moore (Marvin), David Learner (Marvin), David Tate (Eddie).
This version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a quirky, somewhat low budget, adaptation of the book that moves along fairly well. As Dent and Prefect travel through the Galaxy they encounter all sorts of strange beings with the book, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, as their guide. They even stumble upon the meaning of life and everything else, while narrowly escaping death numerous times.
Acting was pretty good with Jones and Dixon having good chemistry and decent delivery that kept the comedy flowing. Jones did a nice job with narration. Dickinson and Wing-Davey were both a lot of fun and added nicely to the film. The remainder of the supporting cast was good, if a bit rough at times.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds appear somewhat low budget and are definitely starting to show their age. Effects were also somewhat low budget but in the end, added to the comedy of the film. Dialogue ranged from amusing to hysterical with plenty of latitude along the way. Sound and soundtrack were both okay but nothing special.
Overall this BBC series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is an amusing presentation in episodes that are just the right length to keep us interested without being overloaded. The story is a well known cult classic that people either seem to love or that bores them to tears.
With some mild sci-fi action, violence, and images this should be fine for teens and above.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
