Military history enthusiasts will not want to miss the special Founder’s Day celebration living- history event taking place at Fort Meigs in Perrysburg, Ohio where you can commemorate the 200th anniversary of this War of 1812 fort on the actual anniversary date of February 2. Perrysburg is approximately a one hour, 50 minute drive from Cleveland.
A Bit About Fort Meigs Established by then Major-General William Henry Harrison (later the 9th President of the United States) on the south side of the Maumee River on February 2, 1813, this 10-acre fort was constructed over a three month period by 200 men using only hand tools, shovels and pick axes to dig through the frozen ground. The Fort was meant to serve as a temporary supply depot and a staging area for an invasion by American troops into Canada.
Fort Meigs was later the sight of a battle during the War of 1812.
Founder’s Day Celebration Visitors to the Fort Meigs Founder’s Day celebration will be able to visit a small winter encampment where they can get a glimpse of what life was like for the soldiers as Fort Meigs was being built during an Ohio winter. There will be demonstrations by costumed soldiers of period construction techniques such as building defensive works and hewing logs. Visitors will get the opportunity to have a hands-on experience when they help dig a trench using a shovel or a pick axe.
And make sure you don’t miss the numerous weapons demonstrations involving muskets, rifles and artillery that will be given throughout the day.
Inside the Visitors Center (where you can warm up and enjoy some hot chocolate and refreshments) there will be several hands-on activities and demonstrations for all ages to enjoy. Activities include learning how to make rope, dressing up like soldiers at the kids’ clothing station, trying hand sewing and watching period carpenters work. The Museum features many artifacts and interactive displays concerning Ohio’s role in the War of 1812.
