If you haven’t been to McDonald’s for a month or more, you don’t know what’s there. The reigning fast food king and perennial number one keeps a relentless push to refresh and innovate their menu. Such is the nature of the industry these days. Stagnation is suicide. The newest line up incorporates fish mcbites, grilled onion cheddarburger, and a shamrock shake or shamrock mccafe.
Possibly the most intriguing development came in the form of fish bites. You remember the chicken mcbites? Same idea- small breaded meat circles, except now with fish. The marketing timing is not too hard to riddle out. During the season of lent, a number of people explore alternative meat choices, particularly on Fridays. However, the logistics have proved somewhat more dubious. Fish, as an inherently more flaky meat, lacks the rigidity of chicken, and so these mcbites can tend to crumble and disintegrate, making a firm dip into the tartar sauce a challenging feat.
The grilled onion cheddarburger has already stayed long enough to demonstrate it’s more than a passing fancy, so this needed exploration. The cheddarburger has taken up residence on the value menu, and does not surpass its one dollar worth. The onions do nothing to enhance the flavor a limp burger coated with cheap cheese.
On the other hand, the shamrock minty-sweet seasonal treat always proves worth while, no matter what form it takes. Change isn’t always good, but at least they keep trying.
