The Mammut Mittellegi jacket was made for adventure. This high alpine terrain jacket is tailored toward your classic alpinism, mixed and ice climbing to expeditions and ski touring/ backcountry skiing. The stretchy GORE-TEX® Pro shell allows for freedom of movement and protection from harsh winter conditions.
The Mittellegi is full of great features. A hood adjustment system allows for a perfect fit at all times with or without a helmet. The GORE-TEX Pro on the Mittellegi is a three-layer stretch material that is extremely abrasion-resistant, very lightweight, wind and water resistant with very good breathability. The front reach sleeves are ergonomically tailored to climbing movements. The extended sleeve hem adjustment with switchback Velcro fully seals the sleeve hem. There’s a front access pit zip for optimized thermal regulation along with front pockets positioned to allow easy access, even when wearing a backpack or climbing harness. A detachable snowskirt designed for the female figure stays securely in place and is made from warm material to protect the kidney area. There is also one zippable inner pocket and two warm inner pockets.
I took the Mittellegi jacket with me on an ice climbing trip to test the features and see how well it would withstand the various weather conditions. I loved the stretch in the fabric. Even with a mid-layer, I was able to comfortably put the jacket on. Of course the real test would be how it would actually move with me while I was climbing.
Movement in the jacket was fantastic. I never had issues with it being too tight in areas when I was reaching and striking the ice for ice axe placement. There was absolutely no restriction in the fabric. The switchback Velcro system was one of the favorite aspects as I could easily adjust the sleeves after putting gloves on. Not once did I have any issues with ice or snow getting inside the sleeves.
There were many instances where I was right up against the ice or rock on the mixed climbs. I scratched up against both types of surfaces and there were no marks left on the Mittellegi jacket. There was absolutely no dampness on the jacket after days of ice climbing and trudging through snow. Any time it got windy out, it seemed as if I had a nice protective shield to keep the wind from piercing its coldness through. The hood helped keep my head dry and warm in the areas my beanie and helmet weren’t covering while belaying.
The Mammut Mittellegi jacket exceeded all my expectations and I got several compliments on how it looked. It’s definitely not bad looking, and the performance is outstanding. There’s no question that I’d recommend it to anyone in alpinism, ice climbing, backcountry skiing, ski touring, or going on an expedition. The durability was top notch and it made for some pleasant days of ice/mixed climbing and adventures. Mammut knew what they were doing when they came out with the Mittellegi jacket as it is expertly crafted, and there isn’t one criticism that comes to mind after putting it to the test.
The Mittellegi is available at local REI stores in Salt Lake and Sandy, IME/Utah Mountain Sports, and Ski N’ See in Sandy.
