Shakespeare, you either love or hate him but one has to admit he did make a large impression on English Literature. Shakespeare wrote some plays that have inspired writers and even filmmakers. At the moment PBS has been airing a TV program called, “Shakespeare Uncovered,” which is a show that everyone should check out. The first episode was about Hamlet with Ethan Hawke and it was an impressive episode! Anyway, this is a list of his best tragedies, its an opinion list only.
Othello, a tale about what lies can do to a once happy couple and what jealously can do to a couple. Trust is the key in this play. Iago is the villain in the play, his jealously of Othello makes him tell Othello that his wife Desdemona is having an affair. Iago even does thing to make it look like he wasn’t lying and sadly Othello even believes him. So, this passionate tale is about dishonesty and you could say even, adultery!
4. Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar a historical tragedy about the assassination of Caesar and the men who killed Caesar. Murder, intrigue, and guilt is ridden in this tragedy. Brutus, is probably the most tragic character of the play, he’s a very conflicted man. Once the deed is done, he’s a wanted man. Julius Caesar is like a lot of Shakespeare plays is about power and what power can do to a man. This time though, this story is about fear, Brutus and the others are afraid of Caesar so they kill him. Death, power, love, only history can help create this play!
3. Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet, one of Shakespeare’s famous plays about the two tragic loves Romeo and Juliet who die because of their love for each other. A story about feuding families in Italy and how their children find love is a classic tale. It’s one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays about doomed love. Suicide and heart-wrenching love makes this play quite tragic.
Hamlet loses his father, his mother remarries his uncle and after seeing his father’s ghost and knowing about what happens he starts going a little crazy. That is Hamlet, is a tragic tale about a Prince in Denmark. Who is so consumed my rage for his father’s death and how he’s going to deal with it doesn’t exactly turn out to his favor. For those who have read this play know exactly what happens to the cast of characters. Ophelia, a woman who loved Hamlet, she could be the most tragic of them all, she also goes insane and even ends her life. Nothing goes good for these character’s in the play. It’s a dark story that reminds one of a Greek Tragedy.
Macbeth, is one of the most tragic stories because it’s a story about a man who is consumed my greed and what he will do for it. His wife, Lady Macbeth is also consumed with power and she drives her husband to become King by telling him to get rid of the competition. She’s basically the brains of the whole twisted operation. Their love story is a story about passion and murder, it’s the Medieval Bonnie and Clyde. It’s a bloody tale and a sad one at that. It’s a great tale that shows what power can do to a man and a woman.
