The Tampa Bay Krewe Rugby Football Club (RFC) took home the MacDinton’s Cup trophy again on Saturday with the club’s 44 to 12 win over the St. Petersburg Pelican’s RFC. Though the Krewe struggled in the first half, the club was able to score 36 unanswered points and shut out the Pelicans during the second half of play.
Saturday’s game was the last regular-season match-up between the two clubs occupying opposite sides of Tampa Bay, so the Krewe will keep the trophy until the MacDinton’s Cup series resumes in the fall.
First half scoring summary reveals the Krewe’s first half struggles
Tampa Bay scored the first points in the game as the club successfully kicked for points to take a 3 to 0 lead over St. Petersburg. The Krewe soon built upon its lead with a try and conversion, which brought Tampa Bay’s advantage up to 10 points.
However, the Pelicans forced the Krewe out of its system, and took advantage of the Krewe’s numerous penalties. This led to a try and a conversion, which brought the Pelicans within three points.
Just before halftime, the Krewe boggled a play that resulted in a dropped ball near its own end zone. The Pelicans ran the loose ball in for the try, and St. Petersburg took a 12 to 10 lead into halftime.
Pelicans unable to retain momentum in the second half
After a fiery halftime speech from Krewe head coach Paul Newsom, Tampa Bay put the petal to the metal in the second half. Right after halftime, scrumhalf Charlie Hutchens gave the Krewe three points from a penalty kick, which brought the score to Tampa Bay 13 and St. Petersburg 12.
From this point on, it was all Krewe, as the club tacked five more tries and four conversions to win the match 44 to 12. For the match, Tampa Bay scored six tries, four conversions, and two penalty kicks to earn its 44 points. Meanwhile, St. Petersburg was limited to two tries and one conversion (all in the first half) for a total of 12 points.
Review of the social and awards
After the match, all of the fans and ruggers from the two clubs converged upon MacDinton’s on SoHo Avenue for the post-game social. The Tampa Bay Krewe awarded Charlie Hutchens “Man of the Match” honors, while the St. Petersburg selected Kayne Kroston as the Pelican’s “Man of the Match” for the second installment of the 2012-2013 MacDinton’s Cup Series.
