The world may be ending but at least President Obama got to play golf with Tiger Woods.
With the set of across-the-board budget cuts slated to kick in on March 1 and slash $1.2 trillion from defense and non-defense spending over the next 10 years, Jon Stewart warned earlier this week that things could get really bad.
“We’re doomed!” howled the host of “The Daily Show” who donned a yellow hazmat hood for emphasis.
At least, Stewart reasoned, the country’s leaders must be working furiously to fix the problem — only to learn from newsmakers that “lawmakers left town for a week-long recess,” and “President Obama played golf with Tiger Woods in Florida last weekend.”
Stewart was not amused.
“Oh, great. I’m sure Tiger Woods has a lot of sequester advice,” he observed (2:25 on the accompanying video). “‘Ah, I dunno, Mr. President, did you ever try hittin’ it with a club?’”
“Correspondent” Samantha Bee offered little comfort, assuring Stewart there was “no need to panic. It’s not like we’re four days away from everything we know as the American way of life being destroyed.”
Everyone in Washington — including the president — was “bucket listing,” Bee said. Which, she said with an are-you-kidding-me facial expression (3:23), explained “golf with Tiger Woods.”
The local law enforcement bill for the First Duffer’s guy’s golf weekend has come in, by the way (golf clap/Jay Busbee). The $78,205 it cost taxpayers to protect the prez as he scooted around The Floridan sounds like a typical day’s wager for Michael Jordan and represents about a Pro V1-sized ripple in the pond of the looming fiscal tsunami.
As Busbee suggested, a certain segment of the population was certain to see red over the expenditures, but it was all in a weekend’s work for the local constabulary.
“We don’t resent doing this,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told New Channel 5/WPTV. “This is part of what we do. He’s the president of the United States of America. It was our obligation to provide the security necessary for the president of the United States.”
