‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ stars Nicholas Hoult as an orphan farm boy who enlightens his dreary life by reading a book of legends about the fearsome giants who once ruled the kingdom.
While on a mission in town to sell the farm’s horse and cart, Jack saves the beautiful princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson). It is while he is in town that he is tasked with delivering a pouch of magic beans to a monastery for safe keeping. When Jack accidently plants one of the mysterious beans, he unwittingly opens a portal between his world and the world of giants high above the clouds.
Deep within the clouds, the giants have waited for centuries to return to a land that once belonged to them. They waste no time in battling the kingdom below to reclaim their territory. As a result, Jack must wage a war against the giants for the kingdom, for love and the survival of the people.
‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ is directed by acclaimed filmmaker, Bryan Singer (‘Valkyrie’, ‘X-Men 2003’). The screenplay of this 3D action film adventure is written by Darren Lemke and Christopher McQuarrie and Dan Studney. Also included in the creative team is the Director of Photography Newton Thomas Sigel and Production Designer Gavin Bocquet. Dominic Tuohy (‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’) served as special effects supervisor and Hoyt Yeatman, Jr., as visual effects supervisor.
This version is a far cry from the old tale where a hapless boy sells the family cow for magic beans. These experienced filmmakers create a crisp and clear adventure film that allows the audience to inactively view a world filled with vibrant colors and intricate details.
Nicholas Hoult seems to be the man of the hour. Hot off of his latest box office smash, ‘Warm Bodies (2013)’ he delivers a believable portrayal of the farm boy destined to be a legend. His comedic timing is sound as he delivers quips as well as blows to the giant invaders.
Eleanor Tomlinson portrays the multi-dimensional Isabelle. Her chemistry with Hoult works well as she reveals a princess who is just as formidable of a warrior as her loyal soldiers.
The lively cast also includes Ewan McGregor as Elmort, Stanley Tucci as Roderick, Eddie Marsan as Crawe, and Ian McShane as King Brahmwell.
‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ is a creative action filled movie that brings to life a legend that is more than just a tale of magic beans. It is available in 3D and 2D in select theaters and IMAX. This film has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for “intense scenes of fantasy action violence, some frightening images and brief language.”
