With National Signing Day just a few days away, the Iowa football secured commitments from three more athletes this weekend, including instate linebacker Josey Jewell.
Jewell, who led Decorah to the Class 3A state championship this past season, committed to the program on Sunday, while the Hawkeyes also got verbals from Akrum Wadley and Anjeus Jones over the weekend, according to HawkeyeInsider.com’s Rob Howe.
“I am very thankful and excited to have the opportunity to become a Hawkeye,” Jewell said in a press release from Decorah High. “My teammates, teachers and coaches have done a great deal to help me reach this point. I am hopeful that the lessons learned thus far from them will help me contribute as much as I can to the Iowa football program.”
Jewell is a 6-foot-2, 200-pounder who played running back and linebacker for Decorah and earned first team all-state honors the last two seasons. He rushed for 3,240 yards and 42 TDs in those two years and also had 310 tackles on defense.
Jewell, who also stars in basketball, baseball and track, had a scholarship offer from the Northern Iowa Panthers but jumped at the chance to play for the Iowa Hawkeyes, who came in with a late offer as the recruiting season winds down.
Jones had a previous commitment to Colorado State but changed his mind over the weekend after an official visit to Iowa City. He preps at South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, Texas, and will play either wide receiver or safety at Iowa.
“I was talking to him and when I looked in his eyes I could tell he was sincere and really wanted me to be a part of the family,” Jones said.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Texan also had offers from New Mexico State and Texas Tech. He first committed to New Mexico. He received a late offer from Texas Tech but decided not visit, according to a story written by Howe.
“I wanted to be in a pro-style offense,” Jones said about choosing Iowa and not looking at the Red Raiders, who run a spread.
Wadley is a 5-11, 170-pound running back who chose Iowa over Temple. He plays for Weequahic High School in Newark, New Jersey.
Wadley, who recently verbally committed to Temple late last month, first heard from Iowa in mid-December.
“I got a call from Coach (Kirk) Ferentz and he was telling me that they were very interested in me,” Wadley said. “He was good friends with (Former Iowa Assistant Frank) Verducci, who told him about me. He told me he was going to stay in contact with me.”
Wadley rushed for 1,326 yards and 20 touchdowns on 102 carries as a senior. He also caught nine passes for 171 yards and three scores and returned two punts for touchdowns.
