Watching the news again- I know I need to stop- and as usual I am struck by the incredible hypocrisy of those who prefer to be known as Progressives. Remember when the cause célèbre was voter ID and how those who might be denied the basic right to vote? Remember how important it was to get marijuana legalized in Colorado and Washington? Remember how (until it was soundly rejected by most voters) people wanted ballot initiatives to legalize gay marriage?
It seemed at the time that universal voting was the most important right and that all the important issues should be decided by the voters. Remember in 2008 when newly elected President (all Hail his name) Obama said, “elections have consequences and I won”? All those “Progressives” could be heard cheering (yeah that’s right- elections HAVE consequences) their leader’s spiking the football in the face of the evil Republican opposition. Republicans, chastened by their defeat in 2008 went to work on the next big election- 2010.
So what happened? In 2010 Republicans regained the House of Representatives, narrowed the gap in the Senate, and won governorships and legislatures in many states. Part of that victory left Scott Walker in the Governor’s Mansion in Wisconsin along with Republican control of both the state Senate and Legislature. On the heels of their victory, Republicans in Wisconsin passed several new laws including a budget reconciliation bill which was controversial in that it limited some collective bargaining rights, including those of teachers.
Knowing that “elections have consequences” the Democrats did what any good “Progressive” would do under the circumstances. They did the legislative equivalent of holding their breath until they turned blue. Actually, they did the legislative equivalent of taking their ball and going home when the Senate Democrats scurried like rats deserting a sinking ship until they were completely out of the state. Their desertion delayed the implementation of the budget reconciliation bill for several weeks.
Eventually, the bill became law and the “Progressives” had to go back to doing what they do best- trying to legislate from the bench. They found a compliant judge in the “Peoples Republic of Madison” to issue a temporary injunction stopping implementation of the budget reconciliation bill until the Wisconsin Supreme Court finally restored adult supervision in June and allowed the bill to become law. As you can see- to the left elections only have consequences when they win.
Why rant about this at this particular time? Well they are at it again. Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele believes a full time County Board of Supervisors is a waste of taxpayers’ money since many of their past duties are no longer necessary. He has suggested a ballot initiative to allow voters to decide if this is a worthy idea. How did the left react to the idea of letting the voters decide something? Predictably they are protesting this affront to the “Progressive” idea that you can’t trust voters to do anything that might impact their slopping at the public trough.
I’m not a huge fan of Chris Abele but I’ve seen some of the antics of the County Board and I love the idea of their ox being gored. More than that, I enjoy watching the left go back to the hypocrisy that has always been their trademark. Remember, being a lefty means never having to wait for something as pedestrian as an election.
