Your sunscreen can have too much SPF
Summer is coming. It is about time we go outside and play in the warm sunshine. Just make sure you apply a good sunscreen before going outside. Your sunscreen can have so much SPF (sun protection factor) that you reach marginal returns. More is not always better. I interviewed Lori Mitchell, RN , of Roseville Aesthetics, to learn about sunscreen.
I don’t believe you can have too much SPF, but you can reach a point of marginal returns. In the trade journals, researchers say, anything over 45 is kind of a nil. What’s the point? People are selling 100 SPF thinking that more is better.
Once you hit the plateau at SPF 45, anything over that is not providing a big benefit. The returns diminish when you get to sunscreens with an SPF above 45.
I recommend at least SPF 30. If your makeup label says it has SPF 15, that is insignificant. I do not count what comes in a makeup. It is very negligible. It is not enough to protect the skin. I recommend using a sunscreen prior to makeup application.
Key ingredients and brands
I tell my clients the only difference between a high end product and a cheaper product is the way it absorbs in the skin. Look for the key ingredients of titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Those are minerals. A mineral-based sunscreen is going to be a physical barrier to the sun whereas a lot of sunscreen are just chemicals. You have to keep reapplying chemicals, but minerals get absorbed well.
If you go to Target, get Neutrogena for babies. It has zinc and titanium in it. You just might have a little bit of a white cast on your skin.
If you get a higher end product like SkinCeuticals, you will find they just absorb nicer. They’re finely micronized so they absorb nice. They don’t give you that white sheen.
My friend says the SPF 50 sample I gave him is very impressive. He says a little goes a long way. If you are using good sunscreen, you will find it gets absorbed well. It will not sit on your face like frosting on a cake.
