Barney and Robin may have gotten engaged before “How I Met Your Mother” took its winter break, but on Monday, Jan. 14, in episode 813, “Band or DJ,” they were faced with a somewhat frightening task: telling her father. Meanwhile, Ted had to face how he really felt about the engagement, Lily confessed something to Ted, and another piece of the puzzle about the future fell into place.
Grown men aren’t blond. Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) met with her “a little scary” father, Robin Sr. (Ray Wise), for lunch, hoping to get his permission since that was something Barney did not do before proposing in “The Final Page” on “HIMYM.” Unfortunately, their lunch didn’t start out well. Robin Sr. surprised his daughter by asking for a hug and wearing a Hawaiian shirt, along with revealing he had a new woman in his life, Carol. “I’m fun now,” he told her. However, he didn’t approve of Barney, even going so far as to say grown men weren’t blond, and when Barney tried to ask for his permission, Robin Sr. interrupted and told him, “Permission denied.” Uh-oh. Barney tried to get him to change his mind, and Robin Sr. put him to the test. He slaughtered a whole family of bears when he wanted to marry Robin’s mother, and Robin walked in to find him trying to get Barney to shoot a rabbit, which he had given a name and backstory. However, then it fell on Robin Sr. to make it up to his daughter when, after accepting his Facebook friend request, she found out he got married and didn’t invite her. In the end, Barney got Robin Sr. to apologize to Robin, though he did say he asked Carol for a divorce since he didn’t think an apology would be enough to fix it. What Robin wanted was a normal father, one who gave Barney permission to marry her, gave her away at the wedding, and danced with her at the reception. He agreed to those terms, but wanted the one dance to be “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” sung by Carol.
The trouble with kids. Marvin was constipated, making for some sleepless nights for Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan), but the key part of the episode came when Lily admitted to Ted (Josh Radnor) that she sometimes wished she wasn’t a mother. It was hard to take care of children or day and then come home and do the same thing, especially since she hadn’t picked up a brush in months. She was neglecting her art, but all she (and Ted) could do was accept what was going on in their lives.
The real issue. Though Ted said he was fine with the engagement, even throwing himself into planning the wedding (including a date, location, and colors), his true feelings came out when it came to the choice of a band or DJ. He kept insisting on a DJ, to the point that he put down a non-refundable deposit on the band Robin wanted. It took Lily dragging him up onto the roof to talk (where she confessed her feelings regarding being a mother) for him to admit that he thought Robin should be with him, not Barney. But after Robin told Ted what Barney did with her father and said he must really love her, Ted said, “He’d be crazy not to. I’m really happy for you guys.” But he thought she should still get a DJ. However, it was very fortunate that in the end, they went with a band because…
The Mother. Four months into the future, Ted ran into Cindy (Rachel Bilson) on the subway and told her that the band had cancelled. Fortunately, her ex-roommate was a bass player in the best wedding band in the tri-state area and they were free for the wedding. And at the wedding reception, as Robin danced with her father, Ted watched the band on stage.
