In the world of television, Charlie Sheen and Psy are hot topics and making waves. On Jan. 30, Sheen appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and his somewhat controversial conversation is being discussed around water coolers on Thursday. Another hot topic is Psy’s upcoming Super Bowl commercial for pistachio maker Paramount Farms. Although the ad remains under wraps, a press statement was released on Wednesday teasing the highly anticipated 2013 Supper Bowl commercial.
Charlie Sheen’s appearance on “The Late Show” was one of the most bizarre late night interviews in quite some time. He hit the stage looking flustered and was apparently very late. “You are cutting it close,” Leno opened. “How about it, right? Less than an hour ago, I was in the shower,” Sheen replied. The “Anger Management” star talked about becoming a grandfather and revealed that he doesn’t want to be called grandpa, but “OG” for Original Granddad. He was very fidgety and kept sipping from his coffee mug.
The conversation awkwardly shifted to Lance Armstrong and Sheen blurted, “He’s kind of a douche. Wow. I didn’t just say that.” He explained that he once approached Armstrong, but was given the cold shoulder. “Sorry to bother you, Captain Bitchin,” Sheen quipped on Wednesday. He then compared himself to Armstrong and stated, “If he was a better guy, I think in his life, he’d be forgiven a lot faster and a lot easier. Kind of like me.” Leno, who made no excuses for being a huge Charlie Sheen fan, replied, “Look, you say I like drugs, I like girls. You’re not a hypocrite. People thank you for being honest.”
Towards the end of the interview, Sheen praised Lindsay Lohan and explained that he gave her $100,000 for appearing in “Scary Movie 5” because the studio shortchanged her. “They offered me a decent amount of cash to do ‘Scary Movie’ as a cameo and when they said they got Lindsay, I said fabulous. Then, they took half of my money to give to her and she didn’t get it all. I said that you got shorted $100,000, so I gave it to her,” he tried to explain. “She’s terrific. She’s going through a lot of stuff. She’s smart and super talented. I think she’ll come out on top eventually.” During the interview, it seemed like Sheen was once again “out there” and Jay Leno was his adoring fan and follower. In a nutshell, the TV moment was bizarre, bizarre, bizarre.
Sheen’s wacky behavior makes flamboyant Psy look tame by comparison. The Korean rapper of “Gangnam Style” fame was also in the news on Wednesday when Paramount Farms released press materials about his upcoming Super Bowl commercial.
“It’s a powerhouse combination,” the company’s vice president of marketing, Marc Seguin, said in a news release that was sent out on Jan. 30. “The Super Bowl is the most widely watched sporting event of the year, ‘Gangnam Style’ is the most watched YouTube video and Wonderful Pistachios is the top-selling snack nut item on the market.” Psy said, “The Wonderful Pistachios brand is fun, just like me. Also I love pistachios and I look good in green.” Seguin added, “People will see Psy as they know him with his personality and great moves. They will see the same ‘Gangnam Style’ action that has swept the nation. They will see him opening pistachios the way only he could.”
Amy Poehler, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Kaley Cuoco from “The Big Bang Theory” will also appear in Super Bowl commercials on Sunday. Psy’s nutty commercial is set to air during the third quarter of Sunday’s big game between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. As of Jan. 31, his “Gangnam Style” video has been viewed 1,246,009,527 times, more than any other in YouTube history, and the first ever to reach one billion views.
