One day, it’s cold. The next day, it’s hot. Welcome to weather in the south. But two things that are always hot: chili and derby girls. You can find both at the Psych Ward Sirens Second Annual Chili Cook-off.
The Sirens are one of four home teams for Houston Roller Derby. Saturday, February 16, the players are inviting fans and chili aficionados to come out to Shady Tavern, 1206 West 20th Street, to sample food and hang out before the 2013 season starts in March.
This is the second year the Sirens have held the cook-off. When asked what will be different this time, Misty Moody, known to fans as Mistilla, says the weather. Last year’s event was subjected to rain. “However, our event is rain or shine,” Mistilla says. And if the temperature decides to dip, she says all the better. “A little cold weather and chili go hand-in-hand.”
For those wishing to prove their own recipes superior, it only takes $50 to sign up. Contestants can bring whatever fixings they chose to compliment their dish. To sign up, email email@example.com for more details. Teams must sign up by February 9 to participate.
A change coming to this year’s competition is the way the chili will be judged. Last year, it was done exclusively by taster’s choice. This year, there will also be a judge’s choice. Like last year, attendees may purchase raffle tickets to vote for the chili they like best, but a judge will also chose a winner. Prizes this year include a cash prize for first place and trophies.
Aside from great food, there will also be a chance to place a bid on some fascinating and fun items in the silent auction. Mistilla says the team has already received submissions from local artists and businesses, including gift certificates for massages and coffee and roller derby-themed art.
Looking to prove how red-hot your love is for the Psych Ward Sirens? Enter the hot pepper eating competition. Last year’s winner, Singapore Rogue, says the peppers weren’t the tiny ones found in the grocery store. “They were the size of rats,” she says, but tastier. To those who think they have the chops to challenge her, Singapore says, “Leave mediocrity to the dead.”
The cook-off is a great chance to hang out with some of the ladies of Houston Roller Derby, show off your favorite chili recipe, or just enjoy some tasty food. “Come warm your heart with your Valentine,” says Mistilla.
