The need for help with depression includes a renewed sense of purpose. After we have been dealing with sorrow, loneliness, or other forms of emotional pain, we need something to set our eyes on for tomorrow. Perhaps we have grabbed a hold of hope once again, but what are we hoping for? What will give us a sense of meaning and significance in the days ahead? You may have been struggling through some bad times recently, but remember, the Bible says “that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28, EMTV)
Whatever circumstances have brought you down, God will transform into something positive. God will mold your trauma into a new work of art.
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. – Ephesians 2:10, NLT
God will help us with our depression by showing us a new plan, by giving us a new goal in life, or by renewing the purpose He had in us all along. “For it is God who is working in you, enabling you both to desire and to work out His good purpose.” (Philippians 2:13, HCSB) If you’ve never trusted Jesus before, believe in Him today and God will also give you a sense of significance and reason to hope in something more.
When the Spirit of God is living inside of us, He gives us inner desires to fulfill God’s will for our lives. He motivates us from within to go certain directions according to the gifts and abilities He has given us.
God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. – I Peter 4:10, NLT
One of the best ways to overcome our own pain is by helping others with their depression. After we’ve experienced the touch of God in our own lives when we were at our worst, God can use us to bring relief to others as well.
Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He is the Father who is compassionate and the God who gives comfort. He comforts us whenever we suffer. That is why whenever other people suffer, we are able to comfort them by using the same comfort we have received from God. – II Corinthians 1:3,4, GW
We ourselves have a mighty significance when we are used of God to show compassion and bring comfort to those who are in despair. That will not only give us a sense of renewed purpose ourselves, but also put us back on the road to happiness, which we will read in the next article.
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. – Philippians 1:6, ESV
