Grown Up Avenger Stuff is set to release their album, Sparkleton on March 11 and in listening to it, the sound is unmistakably assertive. The band seems bent on creating songs that are so intense and multifaceted that the listener has a tough time deciding which one is the best. Having reviewed their Alive EP, which was an energized animation of spirited contemplation’s Sparkleton takes it up a notch with forcing a pleasing sequitur about the band.
“Some of Us,” begins Sparkleton and is reverie of rock music. The trip around lead vocalist Deidre Kroener’s voice and instrumentation from band members, Tyler Thomsen, Hunter Thomsen and John Thomsen is riveting one. The title track grips with its entertaining melody while enhancing the rock n’ roll journey. On this track, Kroener resembles a combination of Grace Potter from Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Monique Powell from Save Ferris especially on the chorus “spread the love, through everything.” “The Beat” takes on a life on its own and is the standout cut on Sparkleton. Magnetic in its charm, Kroener takes on a hip-hop sound that is bewitching and likable in her encouragement in simply feeling the beat.
“Pins,” moves the appealing experience of Sparkleton down a notch with its pensive qualities. Kroener is by no means taciturn on this song but is unequivocally bold in the tonal mode she operates in. “The Man,” is a jazzy, loungy piece that is certain to take a hold of those that are fascinated with a mixture of light and heavy rococo. “Too Cool,” is what the title presents itself as – too cool. It awakens visions of summertime or driving down a highway with the sun beaming down on you. One can try and determine whether Grown Up Avenger Stuff meant for “Too Cool” to display such vision, yet the finished product has indeed. Sparkleton‘s closer is “Do Ya,” and is a fitting finale to an album full of more bubbly life than the Alive EP.
Grown Up Avenger Stuff has received critical acclaim for their musical ambitiousness. Explosive in story, Sparkleton captures the sensibility of pop and the raciness of rock.
