In a day and age of labels and titles, our political leanings can seem quite obscure due to the inadequacy of said labels. For example, most might consider this writer a liberal, yet there are things I am fairly conservative about. I suspect it is the same with most people, a mix of progressive and conservative values.
Labels aside, we find ourselves in a current state of massive change in our electoral landscape. America is getting browner and if not more progressive, certainly less conservative. We know from the endless polls and surveys taken, that the Republican party is shrinking and smaller than it has been in at least a generation. This is due in great part because many center-right voters no longer consider themselves Republicans but independents. As the GOP has shriveled, the shrill, the manic, the out and out crazies with the loudest voices have seemingly taken control and driven the party into the literal dead center of crazyville.
Ok, so calling them crazy might be a bit of a stretch. But I’m at a loss as to what derivatives to apply to an entity that sticks its fingers in its ears and sings lalalalalalalalala to any and every quantified discipline of facts and figures. Climate change? A hoax. Evolution? Blasphemy. Green Energy? A fantasy. Income and tax equality? Socialism. Women’s reproductive rights? Never heard of it. Universal health care? A government takeover. Equal rights for gay/lesbian/LGBT? A subversive mandate.
Almost as illuminating is what these bozos claim to believe in: Corporate personhood. Ending corporate taxes, or at least allowing tax breaks for the wealthy and multi-billion dollar multi-national corporations. Permanently sacrificing our environment for temporary jobs. The continuation of a white male Christian dominated society. Limited immigration, at least for brown people. Unlimited access to hoards of firearms, including assault rifles, machine guns, hundred round drums and extended capacity magazines. Allowing tens of thousands of people to die every year due to a lack of health care, and causing our emergency rooms to stay overwhelmed for the same reason.
Let us be clear that there is no middle ground for these crusaders, unlike most of us. The narrative is clear, if you aren’t full bore nutbar for the entire indoctrination, you are not fit to fight for the new GOP. It is difficult to imagine this world they envision, but I’m glad I don’t live there, at least not entirely. One would think they could analyze why they’ve won exactly one of the last six Presidential elections, and that narrowly. Alas they’re too busy attacking those who aren’t drinking enough of their kool-aid to notice they’re all poisoned.
With all this in mind I get back to the subject of labels. The thought occurred to me that since the true conservative is becoming an endangered species, perhaps we should stop using the term altogether. For myself, as long as the idiotic, the intellectually constipated, and the escapees from the asylum run the Republican party, I will no longer call them conservatives. If those who constantly move our country forward by way of expansion of liberty are called progressives, then all those opposed should be called regressives. After all, they wish to take us back to some imaginary golden age where the massa knew what was best and the rest of us knew our place.
So if you must use these pejoratives, define yourself. Progressive or Regressive. I know where I stand.
