On Feb. 8, Fox posted a behind the scenes look at the Feb. 7 “Diva” episode of “Glee” on YouTube.
In the video, “Glee” star and University of Michigan alum Darren Criss talks about how excited he was to channel Freddie Mercury and perform “Don’t Stop Me Now” and his fellow cast members offered lots of praise for his rendition.
Criss says, “When I turned the page and it said Blaine starts singing ‘Don’t Stop Me Now,’ I’m like, yes! I was so happy. It was one of my favorite songs of all time.”
Jacob Artist praises the performance, saying, “He was phenomenal. He’s got, like, the whole Freddie Mercury, leather jacket going on.”
Jayma Mays compares Criss to a singer from another famous band. She says, “He actually just ended up looking like a lost Village Person, he does. I’m like, where’s the fireman in this scene? Somehow he makes it work, though.”
Criss pays huge homage to Queen’s late, great iconic leader, Freddie Mercury, saying, “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do on the show. Ever. No one will ever sound like Freddie Mercury, nor should they; because he was Freddie Mercury.”
In addition to “Don’t Stop Me Now,” the “Diva” episode is filled with some very powerful numbers like, “Diva” by Beyoncé, “Hung Up” by Madonna, and “This Girl is on Fire” by Alicia Keys.
Here’s a list of “Glee” cast members and the people who they consider to be divas:
- Darren Criss: Beyoncé and Elton John
- Jayma Mays: Madonna, Cher and Hillary Clinton
- Naya Rivera: Nina Simone, Lena Horne, Patti LaBelle and Beyoncé.
- Alex Newell: Beyoncé
Newell shines extra bright in the group “Diva” number this episode, dressed as Unique in a gold flashy gown with a long fur coat. He calls his time in this episode one of the happiest moments in his life.
The episode also marks a bittersweet Brittana reunion, then a second parting, as Brittany tells Santana she’s staying with Sam and urges her to go after her dreams in New York.
Rivera addressed this plot twist for the fan favorite couple in the video, saying:
“What I always say about Brittana, is that, it’s good for the characters to explore and grow. But, at the same time, every single time we shoot a scene, we always have a longing look. So, we’re keeping hope alive.”
This week’s upcoming “I Do” installment airs on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, and brings the whole gang together for Will and Emma’s wedding (including a return from Dianna Agron as Quinn).
As previously reported, Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith) are reunited, and Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine sing a duet and make out in a car. It’ll be interesting to see how Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) reacts to this, as, she is still smack in the middle of a hopeless crush on Blaine and is supposed to be his date to the wedding.
Nobody knows exactly what the future holds for any of these fan favorite couples, who are technically split up for now. No matter what, Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate romance and love and a “Glee” wedding seems like a perfect way to do that.
“Glee” airs in Flint on WSMH FOX66 Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST. Click here for a Flint area channel guide.
